Does Holt become captain of the 99 again? Does he become commissioner?

One of the main characters of Brooklyn Ninety-Nine, Raymond Holt, had an exterior that clashed with his interior. He easily sneaked into our hearts with his empathetic and stoic nature. With his combination of unchanging facial expressions and sarcasm, he had us bursting into laughter throughout the show.

The 99th precinct was always dependent on him for leadership and welfare. On the several instances where he was longer the captain, the precinct visibly suffered, and we, as the audience, missed him in his natural post.

Raymond Holt becomes the captain of the 99th precinct again in Brooklyn Nine-Nine seasons 3 and 7. And he remains so until the end of the series. While Raymond Jacob Holt doesn’t become the commissioner in S6, he is at least appointed Deputy Commissioner of NYPD in S8.

1. How does Holt lose his captaincy in B99?

Holt does not exactly lose his captaincy in season 2 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He retains his rank of a Police Captain but is ceremoniously promoted to become a desk jockey. He does lose the command of 99th precinct and is forced to be the head of NYPD Public Affairs Division.

At the end of Season 2, Raymond Holt was forced to leave his captaincy and take a desk job in the NYPD Public Relations Department. After Holt unearthed an incriminating letter written by Wuntch, she threatened to make the lives of all the cops of the precinct miserable if he disclosed the letter to anyone. As the man we know, Holt could not risk his subordinates’ welfare.

Thus, Holt acted on his arch nemesis, Wuntch’s orders, and left the 99th precinct.

2. How does Holt regain his command in season 3?

Raymond Holt is reinstated as the captain of the 99th Precinct in Episode 4 of Season 3. Following the capture of the Oolong Slayer, Jake makes a deal with Chief Garmin to rename Holt as the captain, and in exchange, Garmin takes all the credit for the arrest.

In Episode 4, Holt and Gina help Jake solve the Oolong Slayer’s case. However, their discovery only leads to the conclusion that the serial killer died several years ago. This results in Holt’s and Jake’s suspension.

Jake, refusing to give up, continues investigating the case and ultimately finds the criminal. Holt arrives in time to catch the latter, and he is arrested. Jake strikes a bargain with Chief Garmin to not let out how he had failed for several years to catch the killer; instead, he offers Garmin the reputation of having caught the Slayer in exchange for Holt’s captaincy.

3. Does Holt become Commissioner of NYPD in Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 6?

Captain Raymond Holt does not become the Commissioner of NYPD in Season 6. It is finally revealed that he has lost the position to John Kelly. The defeat causes him to go into a depression, and he accidentally follows Jake and Amy to their honeymoon location.

Season 5 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine ends with the audience in a state of suspense regarding Holt’s commissioner position. The season ends on a cliffhanger, and the new commissioner’s identity is just barely kept secret.

Season 6, however, begins with the reveal and sees Holt missing several days of work due to the depression the loss puts him in.

In Season 6, Holt is demoted to patrol duty and loses his captain status. On realizing that he only served one month as a beat cop before becoming a detective, Wuntch puts him back in that position to fulfill his missing days.

After the reveal of the results of the competition for the Commissioner of NYPD post, Holt goes into a depression and misses several days of work. In a crisis, he ultimately decides to leave the job, and Jake and Amy have to take several severe steps to prevent him from doing so. Eventually, he realizes that he should continue his work to criticize the new commissioner’s actions and ensure the entire department’s welfare and betterment.

In the process, he comes close to losing or being fired from his job but is forced by Wuntch to stay. She, however, demotes him, and as she is the commissioner, her decision removes him from captaincy.

Holt does not rebel against her order even a bit, and though it was not directly shown in the show, it could be because he struck a deal with Wuntch to use her new power to enable Terry to stay at the precinct. Thus, Holt remains the sole person who has the welfare of his subordinates above his dreams.

Holt regains the title of captain in Season 7. He gets back his dream job after the death of his rival, Madeline Wuntch.

Wuntch had demoted him to patrol duty in Season 6. As the new Commissioner of NYPD, her decision had been final, and at the beginning of Season 7, we see Holt struggling to adjust to his menial position. However, after her unexpected death, he returns to being the captain of the 99th precinct.

6. When did Holt become the Deputy Commissioner of NYPD?

Captain Raymond Holt becomes the Deputy Commissioner of NYPD in Season 8 of the show. He is appointed by the latest Commissioner of NYPD after the implementation of the reforms that Amy initially proposed.

Due to the increasing conflicts between the cops and citizens, Amy prepares significant reform proposals to help resolve the issues. This puts her in direct conflict with Frank O’Sullivan, the NYPD Union President, who tries to sabotage it.

The cops are able to successfully stop O’Sullivan, much to everyone’s relief, and the commissioner orders the implementation of the reforms in the entire city. Holt is appointed Deputy Commissioner, and Amy as Chief of the program in the aftermath.

Though Holt could not fulfill his dream of being the commissioner, we were able to see him take up the deputy commissioner role, a position he deserved and was proud to serve. Thus, the series ended on a happy note for Holt and us too.
