Does Jake merge with his Avatar and become Na’vi permanently?

The crux of Avatar is how for their own capitalistic goals, humans trick the Na’vi tribe under the guise of friendship. They then later blatantly attack them in order to get the rare material, “unobtanium.”

After the Na’vi’s win the war, Jake is left with the choice of either staying or leaving Pandora. So, how does it go about it?

At the end of Avatar, Jake chooses to transfer his mind into his Na’vi Avatar, using the Tree of Souls to merge the two entities successfully. He stays back on Pandora with Neytiri and becomes a part of her Omaticaya Na’vi tribe.

The process through which Jake transfers his consciousness is quite interesting, so let’s have a look at Avatar’s ending.

Why and how does Jake merge with his Avatar?

Earlier in the movie, we’re introduced to the concept of how humans can project their consciousness into their Na’vi Avatars and control their bodies. Although the humans had nefarious reasons for this technology, Jake ultimately uses it to prove his loyalty to his new family.

During the war, the Na’vis tried to transfer Dr. Grace’s mind permanently into her Avatar’s body. But because her human body was injured beyond repair, the transfer was not successful.

After the Na’vis finally win the war, all the humans are banished from Pandora save for those who fought for the Na’vis. Jake has a tough choice to make. As a fish out of water and someone who was formerly perceived as a betrayer, it’s not easy for him to stay back with the Na’vi. Plus there are all the technical difficulties on how he’ll physically integrate himself with the community.

So, he decides to transfer his mind into his Avatar, despite the risks that also caused Dr. Grace’s death. To describe the process, the two bodies are placed side by side with the Tree of Souls acting as the conduit. The Na’vi’s chant while the transfer takes place.

Thankfully for Jake, his transfer is completely successful and he merges with his Avatar once and for all. Thus he can have his “happily ever after” with his dearly beloved, Neytiri.
