The Walking Dead’s final season is all set to release on August 22, and I couldn’t be more excited! All these characters who’ve been with us for a decade now have a special place in my heart. And to top that list is the badass Rick Grimes! I know he was presumed dead in the explosion but did he really die?
Now, I know it was quite painful when he died in Season 9, and the tenth season was a little less alive without him. I mean, not that the show was full of life before, but you get where I’m going, right? So season the finale episode of season 10 did give us all some hope about Rick. But do you think he is alive, or Rick has for sure died in The Walking Dead?
Rick is assumed dead but is still alive. Rick is caught in the explosion he creates to save his family and is heavily injured, but everybody thinks he is dead. However, Anne finds Rick alive on the river bank and rescues him.
So we had seen the last of Rick in Season 9, Episode 5. We see him through a sequence of dreams and reality as he is injured and trying to escape the ‘walkers.’ Finally, Rick wakes up near the bridge, with a part of his shirt soaked in his blood. He barely gets up and starts walking as the walkers follow him.
With blood dripping on the ground, Rick somehow manages to cross the bridge and hopes that the walkers would follow him over it, but they do. He’s almost out of energy and the will to fight and is about to be bitten. But in one quick motion, we see the walker being shot by Daryl. Now they try to divert the walkers, but Rick being Rick, doesn’t want that.
As the walkers cross the bridge, he sees the box dynamites. As one last effort to protect his people, Rick shoots it causing an explosion and killing the walkers along with Rick (At least that’s what we thought.)
We see Rick washed up on the shore, still alive. It turns out the guy still had a little bit of fight left in him. Anne finds him and boards him on a helicopter that originally came for her to save him. But are her efforts fruitful, and is Rick saved?
We don’t see Rick throughout season 10, and maybe he died despite Anne’s best efforts. But mid-season, when Michonne finds a pair of boots that belonged to Rick and also his phone, which gives us some sort of hope. And that’s when Michonne realizes that he might have been on the boat and might even be alive. So she sets off on her quest to find Rick.
Well, I wish he would. After all, he deserves a happy ending, though there are very few in The Walking Dead. So two main things can answer this question.
As we know, Andrew Lincoln, who plays Rick Grimes, has signed three spin-off films that broaden The Walking Dead series and focus more on this protagonist. This could perhaps mean that Season 11 is not the end of this character, whether he appears on it or not.
The second thing is Rick’s interview with SFX Magazine. He mentions that, as of now, he has no knowledge of any scenes in Season 11 involving him. But the actor said, “…never say never…” and I’d like to cling on to this little ray of hope amidst all the darkness!
So sure he could appear in the series, and I’m counting on it, but you know what they say, “Good things take time!” So we might have to be patient enough to see him in the films too!
The Walking Dead Finale Season is set to premiere on August 22, 2021, and I can’t wait to find out!
About The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead is a neo-western horror drama that is based on the comic book series of the same name written by Robert Kirkman. It currently stars Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Lauren Cohan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and others.
Rick Grimes, a sheriff’s deputy, wakes up from a coma to find that the world has just gone through a zombie apocalypse. He soon realizes that the world is divided into the zombies- the ‘walkers’- and a group of survivors who will do anything to survive.
The recent season, that is season 11, will adapt material from issues #175–193 of the comic book series and focuses on the group’s encounter with the Commonwealth, a large network of communities that has advanced equipment and almost fifty thousand survivors living in their different settlements.
