Euphoria S2: Is Rue now a professional drug dealer?

DisclaimerThis article does not promote drug abuse. All the individuals and their respective experiences mentioned in this article are fictional.

Despite being one of the more rational characters in Euphoria, Rue’s addictions are growing even more insatiable with every episode. And my, is it heartbreaking to watch.

At the end of season 1, Rue relapsed into drug abuse. In season 2, she almost dies after ingesting a cocktail of drugs. Thankfully, she is revived by new friend Elliot who gives her Adderall to get her heart beating properly again.

If there was a lesson there, Rue certainly did not learn it, as we see so ourselves in the latest episode. So, does this mean that she is on the path of becoming a professional drug dealer?

In Euphoria S2 Ep3, teacher-turned-drug dealer Laurie hands Rue a suitcase full of drugs, with the intention of selling it. She may start selling drugs, but it is more worrying that she has begun using the fentanyl she found in the suitcase.

From the look of it, this is the beginning of dire times and I’ve put my mind to figuring out what lies ahead for Rue.

What will Rue do with Laurie’s drug-filled suitcase?

In order to keep up appearances, Rue lies to Jules that she is off drugs again and tells her sister that she is only using weed to cope with stress. Seeing Rue gaslight Gia into accepting her fake weed excuse was just tragic.

But Rue once again reminds us dear viewers that she had never intended on staying clean. When she runs out of drugs, she goes full Shark-Tank on how to score drugs quickly and for free.

Rue will acquire drugs from a bigger dealer and then have teen runners operating under her. She can control these runners by holding them to liable data (like compromising pictures), so that they won’t snitch. If any of the runners are caught, their jail sentence will be minimal since they are minors.

Her first go-to guy is also Fez, who flat out refuses to deal her $5,000 worth of drugs.

Her desperation seeks new limits as she convinces Laurie to give her $10,000 worth of drugs, under the guise of selling them. While she may start dealing out some of the drugs, she has already started using them, which is not a good sign.

Now, the show has always made sure to not extensively reveal the drugs used by the characters. But in S2 episode 3, they make a deliberate attempt to show that Rue is using fentanyl, as a nod to USA’s Opioid Epidemic.

Sadly, a big percentage of fentanyl abuse results in death. When Euphoria’s showrunners said that season 2 will be darker, they were not exaggerating.

Rue’s plan may be “f**king genius,” but it is also incredibly reckless and dangerous.  Remember, Laurie’s looming threat that, by hook or by crook, she will get back her money for the drugs given to Rue… it’s not looking good, folks.

Euphoria S2 Episode 4 Teaser:

Like all Euphoria trailers and episodes, S2 episode 4’s teaser is also a cinematic beauty.

In episode 3, Rue lashed out at her sponsor Ali, who has been trying to help her recover. The new trailer once again confirmed that Rue is further pushing people away as she plunges deep into addiction.

There’s also a scene set in church where Rue says “I love you,” (over and over again) possibly to Jules. But it is unknown if this is only playing in her mind or is reality.

The trailer ends with Rue looking as sick as we find her at the beginning of season 1. While she doesn’t believe in prayers much, it’s worth saying one for her fate ahead in season 2.

Don’t forget to tune into Euphoria S2 episode 4 “You Who Cannot See, Think of Those Who Can” on January 30.
