‘Peaky Blinders’ Endgame: Does Tommy Marry Grace?

After Grace fled the city following her betrayal of Thomas Shelby, fans were desperate to know if Thomas and Grace would ever get married and get their shot at happiness.

Peaky Blinders is popular among Netflix’s audience for its outstanding storytelling and mind-consuming cat-vs-mouse games, but not lost among all this is the audience’s interest in the romantic subplots—mainly Tommy Shelby and his lady love, Grace.

Personally, I think it’s the character dynamic that has everyone (especially me) so invested in their storyline. Grace might have betrayed Tommy, but he continues to have feelings for her. Why? Because he sees himself mirrored in her. Thomas doesn’t care that she lied. Because that’s what he does, too.

It’s this sort of intense dynamic that has everyone on the edge of their seats, wanting to know if the two ever end up together.

To add to these flames, Grace Burgess makes her well-awaited return towards the end of the second season. And despite the history of heartbreak and treachery between the two, both Thomas and Grace find themselves helplessly drawn to each other. Only this time, Grace has a two-year-long marriage stringing behind her, and Thomas isn’t without a new romance, either.

Thomas Shelby marries Grace in season 3 after her husband’s suicide. They live with their son, Charles, in a new house, but the reunion is short-lived as Grace gets shot by Vincente Changretta’s assassin. Tommy spirals back into his PTSD with his nightmares now worse than ever.

SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from Peaky Blinders.

1. How Do They Reconcile?

After the two spend a night together, Grace tells Tommy that she’s pregnant with his child. She also confesses that she still loves him, and Thomas is visibly overwhelmed.

Conveniently for them, Grace’s husband commits suicide (the reasons unknown but highly speculated), and the two immediately get together.

Until this moment, Tommy had been preparing for death since he knew that Campbell would try to frame him for murder. But Grace’s announcement seemingly gives him a stronger reason to survive. And he does.

2. Everything That Happens Between Them

At the beginning of the season, we learn that Grace has been married to some wealthy banker in upstate New York for as long as she’s been absent. Thomas seems to have taken this news without much trouble, but we later see him struggling to get Grace out of his thoughts. And yet, when a letter from Grace arrives, Tommy burns it without so much as opening it.

We later see Tommy dial Grace after reading a more recent letter—which (presumably) announces her visit to London—but he hangs up immediately after a man picks up instead. On the other end of the line, Grace asks her husband, “Who is it?” but it’s pretty clear that she knows.

Grace later returns the call and asks Tommy if they can meet. Tommy tells her it’s a bad time to talk, but they decide to meet later.

On the night of the meeting, Thomas takes Grace out to meet Charlie Chaplin, saying that he “wants to impress her.” And before the night ends, they both end up in bed together.

A few days later, while Tommy is orchestrating an assassination plan for Campbell, Grace appears unannounced and refuses to leave until she talks to Tommy. She tells him that she’s pregnant with his child and that she loves him, not her husband.

Tommy is speechless for a moment, but in the urgency of the moment, he assures Grace that it’s going to be okay. He asks her to wait and tells her he’ll find her after the race ends. The two are immediately seen married after that.

After the marriage, the couple goes through some trouble. Grace wants Tommy to give up the shady side of the Shelby enterprise, and Tommy is unable to communicate due to being frustrated with “business” matters. However, the two work through these issues and put up a united front.

As beautiful as this is, it doesn’t last long. Only hours after the marriage, Grace is killed at another party she hosted for the Shelby Charity.

Needless to say, both Thomas and the fans were left devastated.

3. When and How Do They Get Married?

After Grace conceives Tommy’s child, her previous husband is said to have committed suicide. We never learn the reason for this, but it is speculated that he either found out about Grace’s infidelity and killed himself or that Thomas took care of him in order to marry Grace.

There’s a two-year time jump between season 2 and 3, because of which Charles Shelby is already 1-2 years old at the time of his parent’s wedding.

The wedding takes place at the very beginning of the very first episode of Season 3. And not only is it grand, but it’s also wholesome in its own way. Long-time fans of the show (like myself) who’d desperately been campaigning for their ThomasXGrace agenda (again, like myself) were all smiles during the wedding and the afterparty.

4. Why Does Tommy Not Marry May?

Thomas and May Carleton

Despite having genuine adoration for May, Thomas did not marry her after he found out Grace was pregnant. Thomas had initially gotten closer to May solely for her influence and high social standing. But when Tommy reconciled with Grace, he confessed to May that he still loved Grace and suggested that they separate.

But May only smiled and said: “You’ve told me about her like a gentleman, now kindly behave like a gangster for me again.” She later vowed to win him over.

Sadly, May and Thomas never got together after Grace re-entered the picture.
