Wanda AKA The Scarlet Witch Sacrifices Herself in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was one of the most-awaited MCU films this year. So naturally, fans couldn’t wait to see this interesting duo: Wanda Maximoff (The Scarlet Witch) and Stephen Strange go on a multiversal adventure.

The plot was twisted, the intentions were even more warped, and every frame flaunted Sam Raimi’s signature horror style. Before I discuss the topic today, here’s an advice for you. If you haven’t watched the film – Walk away! This is me being reasonable by giving you a warning that spoilers lie ahead.

Let’s just get right to the question, and I’ll save the context and the explanation for later in this article. Does Wanda, the Scarlet Witch, die in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness?

Wanda (The Scarlet Witch) sacrifices herself while destroying the Darkhold and also destroys the Darkhold book from every other universe. While it seems like she is dead, it is unlikely for the MCU to kill off their strongest Avenger.

Let’s take a few steps back and go through the movie’s premise for some context. At the end of WandaVision, we had seen Wanda turn into the Scarlet Witch. She was going through the Darkhold book before she heard the voice of her kids.

The story picks up from there. The Darkhold is the book of the damned and essentially makes the reader an evil person. In the film, she is trying to travel to a different universe where she can be with her children.

So she aims to get to her children by any means necessary, and it is Doctor Strange’s responsibility to stop her. This makes up the premise of the story.

I’m not going to go through all the events, because you either already know them or you’d rather watch the film. Hence, I’ll just skip to how this multiversal adventure ends.

After the Darkhold book is destroyed, Wanda reaches the top of the Wundagore mountain, where the spells, charms, and other contents of the Darkhold are engraved on the walls of a tomb. After the climax fight finishes, she realizes how wrong she was and finally understands the consequences of her action.

So, in a bid to destroy the only existence of the Darkhold in the current universe (where the main MCU takes place), she destroys the walls and brings down the roof while still being seated at the center of the tomb. On a side note, she also destroys the Darkhold in every other universe.

We see the walls crash down on her, showing that she’s dead. However, considering she is one of the strongest Avengers (if not the strongest) and an important character, the MCU might not kill her off so easily.

As of now, there are no official statements about Wanda, aka The Scarlet Witch’s death. So we just have to wait for further news or announcement of projects in which she’s involved.
