Driver Gets A Series Adaptation After 22 Years Of The Game’s Release

Once upon a time, many years ago, i.e., 1999, there was a video game that revolutionized video games but would now be considered as ‘antique,’ or a memory from the forgotten past.

The game in question is Driver, and it’s gearing up to make a comeback, but just in a way that wasn’t expected at all. It is now being adapted into a live-action series.

Ubisoft has teamed up with the upcoming streaming platform Binge to bring the series to life as the streamer prepares for its 2022 launch.

The original Driver game first dropped on PlayStation in 1999 and followed undercover agent and ex-race car driver, John Tanner, whose mission is to take down the local crime syndicate.

The following Driver 2 and Driver 3 games, released in 2000 and 2004, followed Tanner as he took his crime-fighting across the globe to Miami, Rio de Janeiro, Istanbul, and more.

It would be interesting to see how exactly Ubisoft manages to adapt it into live-action. However, fans of the series shouldn’t be too cynical. As was the case with The Witcher recently (and hopefully The Last Of Us), video game adaptations have a lot of scope if done well.

Ubisoft Film & Television’s Jason Altman, Danielle Kreinik, and Genevieve Jones will serve as executive producers for the live-action series, alongside producers Allan Ungar and Vincent Talenti for Binge.

Kreinik, head of television development, Ubisoft Film & Television, said,

Our mission at Ubisoft is to bring our games to life in new and exciting ways and create content set in the world, culture, and community of gaming. Working with Binge will allow us to bring a Driver series directly to the audience who is most passionate about seeing this franchise come to life.

The series will stream exclusively on Binge, an immersive streaming platform created for the gaming universe. The platform will contain exclusive shows, premium channels, and original live-action series based on popular games.

The free streaming platform launches in 2022 and will be accessible on any Internet-connected device.

About Driver

Driver is a video game series developed by Reflections Interactive (now Ubisoft Reflections), and originally published by GT Interactive, later by Atari and now by Ubisoft. It was recently announced a live-action Driver series was coming to the Binge gaming streaming platform.

The gameplay consists of a mixture of action-adventure and driving in open-world environments. Since the series began in 1999, there have been five main installments released.

The game centers around a former racecar driver turned undercover police detective named John Tanner. It featured a storyline inspired by 1960’s/70’s car chase movies and based in four real-life cities; Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York City.
