Dune’s Main Trailer Filled with Plot Details, Fight Sequences and… Punch Lines!

The official main trailer for Dune has been released on July 22. It paints the picture of Frank Herbert’s 1965 science fiction novel for the big screens, releasing October 22.

The novel in itself has been called an epic, given its complicated universe and in-depth world-building. As such, it is only fitting that its story will be told in two movies — the 2021 Dune will be part one.

For newbies, the trailer provides a few baselines about the Dune-verse. Timothée Chalamet will be playing Paul Atreides, son of Leto Atreides (played by Oscar Isaac), who has only recently been appointed as Duke of the desert planet Arrakis.

Leto, along with Paul and concubine Lady Jessica (played by Rebecca Ferguson) shift to Arrakis, well knowing that this new administrative power may simply be a trap laid by their adversaries.

Lady Jessica will play an important role as she is a Bene Gesserit, a sisterhood that is able to train their bodies to attain supernatural strength. As we progress through the trailer, we see Paul training for the disputes to come.

His own enhancement will come through Lady Jessica who will pass him lessons of the sisterhood.

Paul is also frequented with visions, or rather dreams, of Zendaya’s Chani, who we find out is a Fremen, a native of the planet Arrakis. She tells him that her planet is a beautiful one, where you can see “spice” rolling in the air.

Now spice may be an odd element to find in the air, but it is actually a colloquial term for the drug “melange”. Melange is a substance that can extend human life, enhance thought and make faster-than-light travel an everyday phenomenon.

Least to say, it’s one of the most valuable substances in the Dune-verse.

In the end, Paul will act as Messiah of the Fremen, who want their planet free of new powers that aim to enslave them. Paul will eventually adapt to Dune’s hostile environment, as evidenced in his eyes turning blue.

Jason Momoa joins in as Duncan Idaho, first as Atreides’ pilot and then increasingly as their confidant and fighter. Duncan and Paul are seen to share quite a lighthearted camaraderie.

Dune: Part One’s main adversary will be the Harkonnen House, featuring Stellan Skarsgård’s Baron Vladimir Harkonnen and Dave Bautista’s Glossu Rabban.

The main trailer has also managed to address a lot of fan complaints – adding in more details and color, with a tint of humor that was asked for. Cue Josh Brolin’s scene with his character Gurney’s saying “I am smiling” with a poker face.

There is a lot of action accounted for as well, given the themes of colonialism on Arrakis and the Atriedes-Harkonnen antagonism.

Book and cast fans alike have their excitement stepping up. Have a look at a few tweets.

While some parts of the book remain too dense to be adapted, it seems that the 2021 Dune will be a notch higher than David Lynch’s Dune of 1984, especially given all the big names in the extensive cast. Still, the full picture remains to be seen.

Dune will release in theatres filmed for IMAX on October 22. Streaming on the same day on HBO Max will be available to ad-free subscribers.
