Dungeon & Dragons Movie Reveals First Costumed Looks of Cast at SDCC

The iconic D&D game by Gary Gygax may have failed at previous attempts at film adaptation.

But the game’s recent surge of fame owed to Netflix’s sci-fi drama Stranger Things pushed the most recent adaptation into fourth gear, and this could be the one fans have been waiting for.

Based on Gygax’s RPG, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has been in development since 2012, but after a decade of being stuck in a torturous loop of production and lack of interest, the movie will finally release on March 3, 2023.

The upcoming film, directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, will star Chris Pine, Chloe Coleman, High Grant, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Regé-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, Daisy Head, and Jason Wong.

San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) has come back this year after a two-year gap due to COVID-19, and the event will feature major announcements related to some of the biggest film franchises, including Dungeons & Dragons.

SDCC featured a Tavern Experience, showcasing the first looks of the star cast in costume for the film dealing with magical creatures of old lore. ScreenRant has captured the first costume looks of Pine, Rodriguez, Page, Smith, Lillis, and Grant in the live-action adaptation.

The reveals do not tell viewers anything about the specific characters the actors will be embodying, but we can deduce the type of character they will be.

Pine will be playing a bard complete with an electric-guitar-type lute, while Rodriguez’s costume suggests a warrior character. Page’s costume and smaller weapon suggest he will be playing a rogue, and Lillis and Smith don on the costume of wizards, with Grant bringing the rear with the getup of a mentor looking out for the adventurers.

The film also has a panel scheduled for the second day at SDCC and will probably disclose further information about the characters and the film’s plot. With the interviews scheduled tomorrow at noon (PST), viewers can soon expect more detailed tidbits about the 2023 film.
