What Can The Dungeons and Dragons Costumes Tell Us About The Movie

The cast of Dungeons & Dragons were photographed in their characters’ medieval costumes, filming in Northern Ireland. And if a picture could paint a thousand words, these costumes do colour in what we can expect for the 2023 movie.

Michelle Rodrigues takes all the spotlight as she zooms in her own chariot of choice, an electric scooter. The flowery kimono she wears atop doesn’t entirely cover her grunge attire with a metallic-plate armour showing off at the bottom.

Rodrigues’ shiny mask, equal parts futuristic and pandemic proof is a nice touch to the costume overall.

Fans have already put their cards down on Rodrigues playing a barbarian. “Someone you don’t want to mess with,” puts in one Twitter user, while others have expressed their approval by calling it, “amazing!” Have a look at this tweet:

The deduction came with a little help from Rodrigues herself who let it slip through in a F9 interview with ET. She quickly discloses she’s been through massive physical training for her barbarian role.

Chris Pine and Sophia Lillis too arrived at the filming location of County Antrim, Northern Ireland, dressed a tad more modestly than their cast mate. But soon take to the set in their costumes. Have a look at some of the pictures from the shoot:

(And oh, don’t miss the spiked dragon ship!)

Unlike the other characters, Chloe Coleman is seen filming in a golden flowy dress. As it is not exactly fight-gear, it could shed light on her character’s place in the film.

Also joining them for the movie will be Justice Smith, Jason Wong, Rege-Jean Page (famed for his character in Bridgerton) and Hugh Grant. The details of Grant’s antagonistic characters are yet undisclosed but we do get to see what he will look like on-screen:

As a game that heavily relies on the players creating their own characters and forging their unique journey onwards, Dungeons & Dragons adaptations so far have suffered bad audience reaction, having been unable to capture this individuality.

The costumes do indicate that the film will be banking on its medieval fantasy roots. One could expect the campaign settings of Greyhawk or Forgotten Realms as the primary background. It is a safe bet considering that the 2023 film is meant to be a soft-reboot.

The success of Dungeons & Dragons would also mean that any sequels will have more worlds and characters to explore. The crew will have to work hard to ensure that!
