Eternals Teaser Reveals That The Deviants Have Evolved Over Time

Marvel has released a new teaser for the MCU’s Eternals, titled ‘Evolve,’ along with an artwork/poster inspired by the film.

The teaser serves as a warning that the Deviants have evolved, and even Ikaris, the strongest among the lot, is struggling to kill them.

In a story that has been “centuries in the making,” it would be no fun if the bad guys didn’t have an upgrade to challenge our heroes further. And now that the ‘Emergence’ has brought them back, Sersi warns the group, “The Deviants — they’ve evolved.”

With one-liners like Ikaris saying, “Eternals assemble,” to Kingo arguing, “That one was mine!” the clip shows the team of superheroes fighting the Deviants with all their might.

Sersi adds, “Ikaris couldn’t kill it,” to which he replies, “I was distracted,” when the rest of them burst out laughing.

It is a possibility that the Emergence might’ve changed/evolved the Deviants in a way, but the teasers released so far have not disclosed what they looked like when the Eternals first fought them ages ago.

While talking to ComicBook.com, producer Nate Moore spoke about the Deviants,

The Deviants in the comics are called the Changing People, no two Deviants look the same. So in our film, no two Deviants will look the same. But you do see as sort of these parasitic predators when they do kill off a predator in the film, they do take the shape of that predator.

Moore mentions that the ancient ones took on different forms like a bat, wolf, and creatures from “myth and legend in history.” The Deviants all walk on four legs and look like nothing but pure fighting monsters.

The only one seemingly possessing cognitive intelligence is Kro. He is seen standing on two legs when he captures Thena in one of the trailers. The producer added that there’s a mystery around Kro’s evolution as well,

But in the modern-day, the Deviants have evolved. And this is a sort of early concept of Kro, who is the leader of the Deviants. He is the most intelligent of the Deviants. He is the only Deviant who can speak, and that evolution will be one of the mysteries the Eternals have to uncover. Why is he able to do this? Why does he look humanoid when all the other Deviants, to some degree, are monstrous? He has these sort of incredible tendrils that can extend from his fingers and other parts of his body, and he becomes a real problem for the Eternals.

The official Twitter account for the film also posted the first in a series of artwork inspired by Eternals. The poster was made by artist Salvador Anguiano (@Hiperactivo).

It shows the silhouettes of the ten Eternals under their ancient ship, with symbols signifying time and space. And on the very top, we have the prime Celestial Arishem, who was the one instructing the alien superheroes not to interfere in human conflicts.

Eternals is set to have its theatrical debut on November 5, 2021.
