If you thought Nate Jacobs (or even Mouse) was evil incarnate, wait till Laurie shows you her true colors. It’s been a while since a character has left me this terrified, and Laurie does so in a calm demeanor and monotone voice.
“I don’t think I’ve ever gotten angry in my entire life,” Laurie tells Rue, when the latter explains that the reason she bought stolen jewelry was to make up for the drug payment.
At first, this comment almost softens me up to Laurie. Sure, her whole character is jarringly off and she does run a drug ring. But we don’t know much about her and maybe she’s not all that bad… Then she subtly brings up sex work, and I know we’ve landed in hot water.
It is speculated that in Euphoria S2 episode 5, Laurie may have used her drug-dealer connections to find out Rue’s full name. Later she injects Rue with morphine to her worsen her addiction and make her fully reliant on Laurie for survival.
What we and Rue belatedly realize is that Laurie does not need to get angry in order to get what she wants. She’s already smart enough and has laid down the groundwork to get Rue caught helpless in her schemes:
What is Rue’s full name?
The show has never confirmed that Rue was a nickname or not. But as a few fans pointed out it’s totally plausible that Rue’s full name is Ruby Bennett.
Remember when we dived into Lexi’s backstory with her fantasy of staging a production based on her life? At that point too, Lexi renames Rue’s character to “Jade,” which is yet another gemstone. Salute to this careful foreshadowing.
I am the least surprised that Laurie knows Rue’s full name — After all, she runs a drug ring and has men on a leash. She also did make it clear that if Rue wasn’t able to front the drug money, she’ll find ways to make her pay.
What does Laurie plan to do with Rue?
There are speculations that Laurie knew from the beginning that Rue would not be able to hold her end of the business deal. In episode 5 too, she indicates that she knew Rue was lying about being sober.
So this makes me think that Laurie also predicted that Rue would start using the suitcase drugs herself. And what would happen when she runs out? She’d have to turn to Laurie for more.
I also find it laughable that Laurie tells Rue she is all out of drugs, save for morphine. She knows that Rue’s withdrawal is putting her through hell and she’ll say yes to anything.
That is exactly what Laurie wants — She first injects Rue with morphine to cripple her addiction even more and get her fully dependent on her. Morphine through IV isn’t as easily available as other drugs, so if Rue gets addicted it, she’ll have to keep coming back to Laurie.
Once she’s able to control Rue, Laurie can force her into one of her shady businesses, the best guess being prostitution. (She even makes allusions to sex work a few times).
Rue manages to escape at the end of episode 5, but I’m pretty sure Laurie is going to be hot on her heels. There is no way Laurie won’t make Rue pay one way or the other.
I’m not making any predictions about how this will end, but I do know that if Rue wants to stay safe, she needs to ask for help,right now.
