‘Aquaman 2’ Begins Production in Icy Cave: Here’s What We Know so Far

Filming on Aquaman 2, titled Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, has begun 18 months ahead of its release. Director James Wan, who also directed Aquaman (2018), announced it via an exciting new picture of an icy cave on Instagram.

The photograph came with a clapperboard that has the word “NECRUS” on it. In the comics, Necrus, like Atlantis, is another domed underwater city. It is unique in a way that it only exists for very brief intervals of time, and can never be found in the same location twice.

Last year at the DC FanDome panel, Wan teased that Aquaman 2 would have a darker tone than the first film. Aquaman was a massive hit and became DCEU’s biggest success, grossing over $1.13 billion at the worldwide box office.

Here’s Everything You Need to Know about the Sequel

I. Release Date

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has a release date set for December 16, 2022.

II. Trailers, Teasers, and Poster

Not much has been revealed yet, but James Wan previously teased the possible logo for the sequel.

III. Cast

Jason Momoa will be reprising his role as Aquaman/Arthur Curry. Patrick Wilson and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will be returning as well, while Game of Thrones’ Pilou Asbæk recently joined the cast.

Despite petitions signed by millions to remove Amber Heard, she recently confirmed that she will be returning for the sequel.

IV. Plot Details

Not much has been revealed about Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. But based on the title, the film could focus on the Seven Kingdoms of Atlantis. The seven kingdoms include Atlantis, Xebel, Fisherman, Brine, Trench, Deserters, and a lost seventh kingdom.

And now that the working title has been revealed to be Necrus, the film could include a more complex storyline.

According to DC, Necrus owes its existence to an alien satellite that, periodically, enters Earth’s orbit, as it moves through the galaxy. The location of Necrus is entirely dependent on the position of the satellite in Earth’s orbit, at the time the dimensional rift is formed. As the satellite breaks free of Earth’s orbit, the dimensional rift loses cohesion, causing Necrus to fade away.

Necrus is known as “The Black City”. It is ruled over by the tyrant king, Mongo. Pilou Asbæk recently joined the cast in an undisclosed role. Is it too early to bet that he could be playing Mongo?

Despite this exciting news, fans seem displeased and still want Amber Heard replaced as #JusticeForJohnnyDepp is trending again on Twitter. Fans tweeted that they’d boycott Aquaman 2 if Heard wasn’t fired from the role of Mera. Understandably, fans want the same treatment for Heard as that meted out to Johnny Depp, when he was the accused.

When Depp was accused of domestic violence, he was fired from two of his iconic roles. Margot Robbie is said to be replacing him in Pirates of the Caribbean 6 and Mads Mikkelson will be replacing him as Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

There’s still a lot of time before Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hits the theatres. DCEU has films like The Suicide Squad, The Batman, Black Adam, and The Flash slated for release before the Aquaman sequel.
