Sex Education Season 3: Everything You Need To Know

Bucker up fans, because Moordale High kids are back and we’re all set for another blast of a school year. Sex Education is returning on Netflix with Season 3.

If you’re a crazy fan like me, this is already old news. But how about some speculation, recaps and fan theories about what is coming up? I am sure you’re up for that.

Here’s the thing about a typical young adult drama series featuring school kids: it’s always about first love, first sex, break ups, bitching about people behind their backs and stealing boyfriends and girlfriends.

But Sex Education did not take this route. The reason why it is different is because it does total justice to its name. It is actual sex education. Only not as boring. Over the years, teen dramas in popular television has never really been known for its inclusivity.

It is a refreshing change and a real treat to watch something with well written characters, good character depths and most importantly, a sensitive handling of a topic such as sex education without being all preachy. That is what did the trick for me.

I am more than just excited for Season 3, so here’s everything we know about it till now, or don’t.

1. Sex Education Season 3 Release Date

Let’s begin with the basics first.

Sex Education Season 3 will release on Netflix on Friday, September 17th, 2021. The season will reportedly have eight episodes. The average length of each episode is around 45-55 minutes and like Season 1 and 2, all episodes of Season 3 will release together.

It was actually a pretty long gap, considering Season 2 premiered in January 2020. But there was a delay in filming and production, for obvious reasons. I am just really glad the show is returning finally!

2. Sex Education Season 3 Teaser, Trailer and Posters

Sex Education Season 2 Ending Scene

Netflix released a teaser of Season 3 of Sex Education on July 19th, 2021 and it had an interesting title i.e “Moordale Secondary – Official Advert | Enrol today for a Brighter Future!”.

The teaser is not your regular teaser with glimpses from the season, but an advertisement of Moordale Secondary School and a pledge to encourage people to study there or enroll their kids there.

The teaser features almost all of our familiar faces such as Maeve, Otis, Eric, Jackson, Adam, Aimee, Viv, Ola, Lily and others. But it introduces a brand new character – Hope Haddon who has replaced Mr Groff as the new principal of Moordale.

Her vision of reviving Moordale and its principles seems to be the highlight of the teaser. Apart of the 2 minute 4 seconds long teaser, Netflix also released several posters which revealed Emma Mackey’s new look as Maeve in Season 3 and also gave a glimpse of all the other characters.

Margot Robbie and Emma Mackey in Sex Education

BTW, if you’ve been wondering if this poster featuring Margot Robbie and Emma Mackey together for Season 3 is legit, then consider yourself fooled. It was a fake poster that went viral some time ago on the internet because of the running gag about Mackey having an uncanny resemblance to Margot Robbie.

I would not mind Robbie actually joining the cast though. Maybe as Maeve’s elder sister? That would be wild.

3. Sex Education Season 3 Cast

The cast will feature familiar faces from Seasons 1 and 2, including the main leads, Asa Butterfield as Otis Milburn and Emma Mackey as Maeve Wiley.

Cherry on top: Maeve has another brand new hairstyle this season as we saw in the Season 3 teaser! Mackey is seen sporting black hair with fringes this time!

Along with them, the cast members such as Ncuti Gatwa as Eric, Gillian Anderson as Jean Milburn (Otis’s mother), Connor Swindells as Adam, Aimee Lou Wood as Aimee and Kedar William Stirling as Jackson are all set to return for Season 3.

I am also guessing we will see more of Isaac, played by George Robinson, who was literally the turning point of the Season 2 finale. More on that later.

Reports also suggest that four new characters have been written into the script for the new season. Now that is exciting. There is Hope Haddon played by Jemima Kirke. From the Season 3 teaser, it is clear that she is the new head of Moordale High, replacing Headmaster Groff.

Jason Isaacs (HP fans, remember Lucius Malfoy from the films? He is the one) will also be joining the cast as Peter Groff, Adam’s uncle. Trust me when I say I am super thrilled to see if he will be somewhat reprising his role as Lucius Malfoy or his character will be much more kind this time.

The other two new members in the Season Education cast is Indra Ove, who plays Anna, the foster mother to Maeve’s baby half sister and Dua Saleh, who will be portraying a non binary student named Cal.

4. Everything We Saw In Season 2

Time for a bit of a recap.

Season 2 began with Maeve returning to Moordale High to complete her school education. Otis, the awkward teen who we witnessed being in love with Maeve for most of Season 1 had moved on and was already dating Ola.

Sex Education Season 3: Everything You Need To Know
Ola and Lily

Ola in turn is also the daughter of Otis’s mother Jean Milburn’s boyfriend, which kind of made things gross for the couple.

The highlights of Season 2 were many.

Maeve and Otis got back as business partners once again to continue their sex clinic but failed miserably because Jean Milburn being a professional sex therapist gave them competition.

Maeve finally confessed her feelings for Otis and it freaked him out so he said he would not see her again, only to break up with Ola later because she finds herself attracted to Lily. Ola comes out as pansexual in Season 2.

Otis finally lost his virginity to Ruby in a drunk state and Eric gets together with Adam, who realizes he is bisexual and confesses his feelings for Eric.

We meet Maeve’s mother who is arrested at the end of Season 2 because Maeve tells the police about her being a drug addict. Season 2 also introduced us to Isaac, Maeve’s new caravan neighbor who becomes friends with her quite quickly.

Though deep down, we all freaking hate Isaac (I do too!) for what he did in the Season 2 finale, it is also important to understand the importance of a differently abled character playing an important role in mainstream series.

FYI, George Robinson, who plays Isaac is on a wheelchair in real life too.

5. What Happens In Sex Education Season 2 Finale?

The season finale is extremely crucial because it will definitely affect many things that will take place in Season 3.

The most important bit about the Season 2 finale was the ending scene: Otis confesses to Maeve that he is in love with her.

Sex Education Season 2 Ending Scene

It’s always been you, Maeve. I love you.

These were Otis Milburn’s final words in the voicemail that he left for Maeve after watching her win a quiz competition for the school. We Maeve-Otis shippers finally got what we were waiting for only for it to be ruined by Isaac.

In the end, Isaac listened to Otis’s voicemail before Maeve, and deleted it. It’s not a genius guess that he obviously intends not to tell her about it. There was a time when we all wanted to punch him in the face. Ugh.

Apart from the huge twist, there were some big reveals: Eric and Adam get together, Maeve’s mother is arrested for being involved in drugs and finally, Otis’s mother realizes she is pregnant with Ola’s father Jacob’s child.

6. What To Expect In Season 3?

A recap of Season 2 finale definitely leaves hints as to what we can expect in Season 3.

First of all, I hate to admit but I don’t think Season 3 will fulfill our dream of seeing Maeve and Otis together. I am expecting a final confession and getting together in the season finale or something, but not sooner.

Isaac

Besides, I guess Isaac will still be a part of Season 3, so that is there.

We will also see Jean dealing with her pregnancy and how Otis will be able to come to terms with his mother being pregnant. The show has always explored things such as mother-son dynamics and unlikely friendships, so we can expect more of that.

Jackson and Viv seem to have been developing a unique but unlikely friendship. Season 3 might explore more into that. According to the trailer, Jackson is headboy so the track about him managing his studies and sports will also continue.

Most excitingly, we are all set to be introduced to four brand new characters, so there will be new tracks and exploring of new plotlines. Hope Haddon seems to have a new Moordale dream to bring the school back of track and from what we saw in the trailer, this seems to be a major part of Season 3.

Adam and Eric is now official, so whether they will last or not and if yes, the dynamics of their relationship will be explored.

Above all, we can surely expect more awkward jokes, sex talks and weird laughs because that’s all Sex Education promises us.

7. Will Maeve and Otis Get Together?

Coming to the final and most essential question which the fandom has: will Maeve Wiley and Otis Milburn finally get together?

Maeve and Otis have a beautiful friendship and would most probably (I am being modest, most definitely!) make a good couple. Considering how popular a ship they are among fans, they should get together sometime in Season 3.

Maeve and Otis

The makers have been teasing a romantic relationship between the two since Season 1. First, they ran a secret sex clinic together and became partners. Despite dating Jackson, Maeve shared some almost-kiss moments with Otis.

Otis also knew about Maeve’s pregnancy when no one else did and it was confirmed more than once than both have feelings for each other. In Season 2, Otis dates Ola but finally confesses his feelings for Maeve only for it to be ruined by Isaac.

I think the two will definitely date at one point. Trust me, hearts will be broken if that does not happen or if it does and then either of them change their mind. I would literally pay to see them together. Let us just keep our fingers crossed, hoping we finally get some Maeve Otis.
