Evil Dead Rise Set Photo Reveals Filming Is Halfway Complete

In May, it was reported that Evil Dead Rise was heading to HBO Max, and filming officially began in June on location in New Zealand. Now, writer/director Lee Cronin teased followers with a set photo and confirmed on Twitter that filming is halfway done.

6 weeks. 100 rolls. 597 slates. We are half way. #EvilDeadRise

Lee Cronin’s Tweet

Cronin first tweeted about it on the first day of filming on June 7, and he linked the recent update to his original tweet. Both the tweets show images of clapperboards with that day’s filming details.

So, the set photo doesn’t really reveal anything new about the plot or the characters. Still, it’s commendable that within six weeks, the filming is already halfway done. It is expected to release in 2022 on HBO Max but has no confirmed theatrical release.

The original 1981 film follows five friends who travel to a remote cabin in the woods where they play a tape with incantations. This releases the demons which possess them in succession until only one is left fighting for survival.

The Evil Dead franchise has had several reimaginations so far. First, there’s the original trilogy that started with Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead in 1981—followed by the series Ash vs. Evil Dead, which ran on Starz for three seasons from 2015 to 2018. And the 2013 version of Evil Dead by Fede Álvarez.

The film will be a fresh chapter in one of the most iconic horror franchises. Evil Dead Rise is executive produced by Evil Dead original director Sam Raimi and star Bruce Campbell.

It is a direct sequel to the 2013 film, a soft reboot of the classic series. However, Campbell, who helped kick off the franchise, won’t be returning to play Ash.

Bruce Campbell

In an interview with EW, Campbell said that even though he isn’t in the film, he’s still very much involved in the process,

People can actually call it what [they] want: Sequel, remake, reimagining. It really is just another Evil Dead movie. It’s book-centric. It’s all about the Necronomicon. In this case, it’s set in the city, it’s no more cabin in the woods. It’s entirely different, unsuspecting heroines who are going to save the day.

It’s filming now in New Zealand, with some of their amazing crews down there, and they’re well into it. Rob Tapert is the hands-on producer, and we’re all very involved in the script. We all jump in at various times to chime in. But, yeah, the three of us are very involved.

Yet we hope he returns for a cameo at the very least.
