The Church instructs the trio to investigate the case as the survivors’ testimonies bear similarities to the tale of an old Sicilian nun.

As the investigation ensues, both Kristen and David have experiences with this “angel” who warns them of impending danger. Another survivor makes a distinguishing remark about the angel—that she was Black.

This causes David to realize that a lot of his theocratic education was influenced by the dominance of Caucasian representation in religious imagery. That night, when he has a vision of the angel, he sees her as Black for the first time. This experience only intensifies his doubts about his faith and the mission and he wonders if his visions are nothing more than a product of his mind.
