Does Loki Finale Connect to NWH? Spider-Man Writers Explain

When the events during Loki’s finale opened up the multiverse, it felt like a deliberate connection to the problems that Peter Parker would face in No Way Home. Spider-Man writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers state that it didn’t actually start out that way.

The writers say that while they were aware of what would happen in Loki, NWH was written independently. The way the two productions aligned was nothing but a happy coincidence. But where they actually stand chronologically in the MCU is unknown to the writers as well:

Whether certain things that were happening in ‘Loki’ line up in terms of the timeline exploding and is that the same time that Doctor Strange is casting the spell, I don’t know.

So, there is a small possibility that Sylvie killing He Who Remains may have played a part in messing up Strange’s spell. Perhaps Marvel will give us a grand reveal of the timeline in one of the upcoming multiverse movies. (Fingers crossed… Doctor Strange 2?)

However, even without considering Loki, NWH would’ve looked very different. Once again, the pandemic had a big role to play in this.

NWH was supposed to start shooting in July 2020, with a release date scheduled for after Doctor Strange 2. This means that Peter would have to deal with his Mysterio problem after Strange approached Wanda about the multiverse.

But with multiple NWH shooting delays and Doctor Strange 2 being pushed back, McKenna and Sommer had to flesh out a new route for NWH.

They decided that since they couldn’t have a multiverse-experienced Strange, they would do the opposite and raise the stakes with Strange knowing very little about the multiverse.

This, in turn, would get him interested in the concept and give impetus to visiting Wanda, as we now see in the official trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

In my opinion, this was definitely a better decision—if Strange had dealt with a multiverse problem before, his actions in NWH would’ve been unforgivable. His lack of experience and information is a fitting explanation for the spell going wrong and his stance against Peter’s “solution.”

This little tryst with the multiverse in NWH is bound to leave him curious. In Doctor Strange 2, we will find out what exactly Strange remembers about his botched-up spell and how that will drive him to explore it further.

Of course, the multiverse will come knocking, thanks to Wanda, Karl Mordo, and Strange Supreme!
