How F9 Sets Up The Final Films In The Fast And Furious Franchise

F9 is out in cinemas, and as expected, it is action-packed, from the beginning to the end… and beyond. The film’s ending and its Marvel-esque mid-credit scene set up storylines and characters for future installments in the Fast & Furious franchise.

Initially set to release in 2020, the delay caused by COVID-19 lasted a year. Universal has already announced Fast & Furious 10 and Fast & Furious 11, a two-part finale to the main series, similar to what the Harry Potter franchise did with the Deathly Hallows.

SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from F9.

The film was a highly anticipated one as the early trailer revealed that Han is alive and the whole reveal about Dominic Toretto having a secret brother, Jakob, played by John Cena (I mean, how hard can it be to hide a man that U can’t C).

Dominic Toretto

F9 follows Dom and his crew a few years after the events of The Fate of the Furious. The movie begins with Dom and Letty in the countryside, living a peaceful life and raising Dom’s son Brian. This peace is short-lived when Roman, Tej, and Ramsey arrive on a mission for Mr. Nobody.

Dom’s brother Jakob betrays Mr. Nobody to obtain pieces of Project Ares, a device that can control every piece of electronics on the planet. And hence, begins the chase. By the end, the crew is triumphant and stops Project Ares from launching while setting up the franchise’s future.

Jakob Toretto switches sides in the end, leaving the possibility open for him to join the ‘family’ in the future. The brothers bond as Dom forgives Jakob and gives him his ‘68 Dodge Charger and a second chance. Jakob then drives away (hopefully, he’s driving towards Fast & Furious 10).

Jakob & Cipher

As for Cipher, she might end up being the main villain of Fast & Furious 10. She was also the main villain in The Fate of the Furious but managed to escape. In F9, she’s not really an immediate threat until the end moments. It would be interesting to see how she bounces back after Dom already having defeated her twice.

The film ended with the hint at Brian’s return and post credits setting up Han’s revenge against Shaw.

Following Paul Walker’s untimely demise during the production of Furious 7, the franchise kept his character, Brian O’Connor, alive. There are mentions of him settling down elsewhere and focus on being a father. F9 explains that he is the one watching Dom and Mia’s kids when they’re on mission looking for Jakob.

Brian’s signature blue Nissan Skyline pulls up in the driveway at the end of the film, but it rolls the credits before we even get to see him.

Walker’s brothers played Brian in the unfinished scenes in Furious 7 and are looking forward to returning for the finale. It would be interesting to see how they bring him back IF he’s set to return in Fast & Furious 10 and Fast & Furious 11. Perhaps they’ll use similar techniques and CGI effects like they did for Furious 7.

Coming to the mystery of Han, the post-credits scene sees Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw in a quick cameo, where he’s using an actual human being as a punching bag. He stops abruptly when someone knocks on his door and is shocked when he sees that Han is alive and standing in his doorway. Maybe we’d get #JusticeForHan in the future film if he gets even with Shaw for attempting to kill him.

Dom and Letty

Dom and Co. definitely aren’t gods (yet), so they didn’t exactly ‘resurrect’ Han from the dead. It turns out that Han’s death was staged by Mr. Nobody, who had recruited Han to work for his agency. All this time, Han was in Tokyo protecting Elle, as her DNA could unlock Project Ares.

Fast and Furious 10 is currently in pre-production, so it is only a matter of time before all our questions are answered.

About Fast and Furious 9

Fast and Furious 9 (or F9) is an American action film directed by Justin Lin. The film is a sequel to 2017’s The Fast and Furious and the ninth instalment in the Fast and Furious franchise.

The film will star Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Helen Mirren and John Cena, among others. The film was delayed for over a year due to the pandemic in March 2020. It is scheduled to release in the United States on June 25, 2021.

Dominic Toretto is leading a quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, little Brian. But they know that danger always lurks just over their peaceful horizon. This time, the threat will force Dom to confront the sins of his past. His crew joins together to stop a world-shattering plot led by the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver ever seen: a man who also happens to be Dom’s forsaken brother, Jakob.
