Vin Diesel Says ‘Fast & Furious 9’ Will Reveal Dom’s Origin Story

Fast and Furious 9 will delve into Dom Toretto’s origins, according to actor Vin Diesel. As the ninth installment in the blockbuster franchise, the movie will see the return of Toretto and his family, consisting of international criminals reuniting to take on Dom’s estranged brother, Jakob, the new villain.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor said Fast and Furious 9 would be a deep dive into his character’s backstory, further confirming that it will feature many moments that occurred previously and tie into the original 2001 movie that launched the series.

Diesel also noted that the upcoming movie would answer several questions about Dom’s past, including his current occupation as a renowned street criminal.

“The whole world has this excitement about this movie coming out, but for those who have been with the franchise, it’s even more special. Because if you can remember the first movie, you are now going to go before the first movie and understand the first movie even more…that’s cool stuff.

I’m a [Dungeons & Dragons] head, so that’s like the origins stuff. To see family members you never thought you would have seen—it’s gonna kind of blow your mind. We’ve been wanting to know—where was Dom before he became Dom? Who were his influences? That’s going to be really rich with story, and a lot of fun to see.”

Touching back on the original film, the actor also noted that F9 would specifically recall the “I almost had you” scene where Dom teases the late Paul Walker’s character Brian O’Connor after almost beating him in a race. However, Diesel explained that the movie would revisit the scene from a different perspective and pay tribute to Walker. At the same time, it could also shed light on how his brother Jakob ties into Dom’s early days of street racing.

With the franchise having evolved into a full-action spectacle, it will be interesting to see what’s in store for the upcoming installment. Considering Diesel still dotes on the series’ heydays, it could indicate that F9 might be the most sentimental among the lot since Fast and Furious 7, which saw the last goodbye of Paul Walker.

Known for its immense financial successes, the franchise keeps on raising the bar with every movie. Thus, with F9, we can only hope to expect more. Diesel has already revealed that his son Vincent Sinclair will be joining the cast to play Dom’s younger version in the film, along with John Cena, who will play Jakob.

Initially scheduled for release in 2019, the movie was delayed for over a year due to the COVID pandemic. It is currently scheduled for release in the US on June 25.
