Beyond the Sequels: Favreau Teases Next Phase of Star Wars Franchise

Jon Favreau, the creator of The Mandalorian, has shared that Lucasfilm is currently exploring ideas for the next phase of the Star Wars franchise, which could potentially take place after the events of the sequel trilogy.

While the sequel trilogy was controversial and supposedly marked the end of the Skywalker saga in 2019, there are still characters from this period that could appear in future films.

In an interview with Moovy TV, Favreau discussed how Lucasfilm is internally discussing ways to navigate the timeline and discover new stories within the Star Wars universe after the sequels.

There’s definitely a conversation that’s going on. And also what happens after the sequel trilogy, because the sequel trilogy only takes place over the course of a few years. And it’s a big thing on the screen, and it’s very eventful. But it is a relatively brief moment in history over the course of the thousands of years that Star Wars takes place. And so what happens after it is interesting too, and I know that there’s some discussion, exploration going on about what happens after it.

Given that Favreau was a storyteller during the period preceding the sequel trilogy, it’s likely that he’s involved in the discussions that influence the direction of the franchise moving forward.

Since the timeline following The Rise of Skywalker is completely blank, there’s ample space for fresh minds to make their mark on the plot.

The reception to the sequel trilogy was not entirely positive, leading to questions about whether the next film in the franchise should take place in that time period.

News reports have suggested that a new Star Wars movie by Damon Lindelof will be revealed at the Star Wars Celebration event in April. It is rumored that a few characters from the trilogy will make an appearance.

However, it is not yet known whether the main characters like Rey and Finn will return or if other less well-known characters will take center stage. Ultimately, the direction of the story will determine the outcome.

The galaxy’s current state is very similar to the post-Return of the Jedi era. So, fans would not be pleased if the creators were to repeat the stories from that time period.

Since Ben Solo and the Skywalker family are no longer around, any stories after The Rise of Skywalker would have to focus on either the New Republic’s recovery or Rey’s continuation of Luke’s Jedi Order.

Although the creators could explore these storylines through TV shows, the next Star Wars movie will probably continue the events from the sequel trilogy. We can expect more updates from Lucasfilm in about a month.
