Timothée Chalamet Reveals First Look At His Version Of Willy Wonka

Over the years, a ton of films have been made based on Roald Dahl’s classic children’s novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and there’s a new one currently in the works at Warner Bros.

If you’re a millennial, you might instantly associate Willy Wonka with Johnny Depp, whereas if you’re a little bit older, you might think of Gene Wilder. Now, the newer generation is getting its own Willy Wonka, portrayed by none other than Timothée Chalamet.

Just a few hours ago, the actor took to social media and posted a picture of himself in full costume alongside a second picture of a staff with a tiny present box on it.

Earlier this year, there were reports that Chalamet was up against Tom Holland for the role. But looking at Chalamet in the whole Wonka getup, it seems like the casting director definitely made the right choice.

You might be wondering, ‘is another Charlie and the Chocolate Factory reboot really necessary?’ Well, kind of. The new film, titled Wonka, isn’t exactly a reboot; it’s a prequel.

In fact, reports suggest that it might not even have the character of Charlie Bucket. Chalamet will be playing a young Willy Wonka before he opened the Chocolate Factory (which also means there won’t be any Oompa Loompas around).

Paul King directs Wonka, with David Heyman set to produce alongside Luke Kelly, with executive producers Michael Siegel and Alexandra Derbyshire.

Earlier in 2018, Heyman told Collider about Wonka being a prequel,

We are still trying to figure out how to tell that story, what the story is. It’s a prequel, it’s not a sequel. What makes Willy—when we find him at the chocolate factory doing the golden ticket, where is he before that? What leads him to that place where he’s locked himself away?… It’s how does he get there? So we’re playing around with that.

The Tim Burton version with Depp’s Willy gave him a dark backstory where his dentist father made him wear heavy headgear and didn’t allow him to have any candy in his childhood. It would be interesting to see which direction the new film will go in.

This isn’t the first time Chalamet has played a role that previously belonged/related to Depp. In a Cadillac Super Bowl commercial last year, Chalamet portrayed Edward Scissorhands’ son, Edgar.

Besides Chalamet, other actors announced so far are Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins, Olivia Colman, Keegan-Michael Key, Tom Davis, Simon Farnaby, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Mathew Baynton, Jim Carter, and Rich Fulcher.

Wonka is slated for a theatrical release on March 17, 2023.
