Some Future GOT Spin-offs Might Be in Danger, Hints Martin

George R. R Martin recently shared a status update regarding the upcoming Game of Thrones spin-offs, confirming that WB and HBO Max shakeups have impacted the development of the projects.

HBO adapted Martin’s best-selling fantasy drama series, A Song of Ice and Fire, for television, which quickly became a revolutionary success. Game of Thrones still remains one of the most successful series in the history of television.

As a result, HBO went all in, investing huge amounts of money in multiple spin-offs set in the same universe. The first among these, House of the Dragon, premiered on HBO Max in 2022, and became a massive success for the platform.

But according to George R.R Martin himself, the future of some of the other spin-offs which were on the cards might be a little dicey. HBO Max has been going through a troubled time recently, due to ongoing shakeups within its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery. The shakeups have led to projects like Batgirl being canceled.

Now, it seems like the upcoming GOT spin-offs are not safe from the consequences of the rift either. Martin has himself spoken up about it in his blog. Check out what he has to say below –

I did take a few days off for the holidays, I confess. Shame on me, I guess. But now I am back in the salt mine, working… working on so many bloody things, my head may soon explode. Yes, WINDS OF WINTER, yes, yes. And HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, season two. And several of the other successor shows that we’re developing with HBO. (Some of those are moving faster than others, as is always the case with development. None have been greenlit yet, though we are hoping… maybe soon. A couple have been shelved, but I would not agree that they are dead. You can take something off the shelf as easily as you can put it on the shelf. All the changes at HBO Max have impacted us, certainly).

Martin does not specify in his blog which spin-offs are shelved and which ones are safe. However, he does mention that none have been officially greenlit. If we’re to assume based on the information available, it seems like the Jon Snow spin-off, which is reportedly already in development, is the least likely to get shelved.

Jon Snow is one of the most popular characters in the GOT franchise and Kit Harington will reportedly reprise his role as Jon in the upcoming spin-off. Thus, there’s a high chance of the show becoming a success, which all the more keeps it in a safe zone.

HBO has also released a trailer for the Jon Snow spin-off, which is a good sign. Though the trailer does not offer anything new other than being a conglomeration of Snow’s most iconic moments from Game of Thrones, it is still an assurance that the show is definitely on the cards.

Other spin-offs that were on the cards include a show centered around Corlys Velaryon aka the Sea Snake, who has been an integral part of House of the Dragon season 1. As of now, nothing can be said about its status, especially after Martin’s ambiguous comments.

There’s also a spin-off titled 10,000 ships focusing on Princess Nymeria, a character who may not be too popular among casual fans. Again, nothing can be said about its status yet. Two GOT spin-offs, Flea Bottom and Bloodmoon, have already been canceled. Only time will tell if any of the other discussed projects will join them.
