How Game Of Thrones’ Downfall Began – According To George R.R. Martin

Apologies for bringing up things you’d rather forget, but as far as the general consensus goes – Game of Thrones had one of the most disappointing endings in the history of television.

Whenever someone mentions the series, I can’t help but think about the meme where the drawing of a horse progressively gets worse.

If you’ve thought of it as well, you’re far from being the only one. The creator of the lore, George R.R. Martin himself, has expressed that he feels the same way. (via winteriscoming.net)

In a new book, titled Tinderbox: HBO’s Ruthless Pursuit of New Frontiers, by James Andrew Miller, Martin’s representative, Paul Haas, revealed that the author strongly feels the show went off-track after its fifth season,

George loves Dan and Dave, but after season 5, he did start to worry about the path they were [going down] because George knows where the story goes. He started saying, ‘You’re not following my template.’ The first 5 seasons stuck to George’s roadmap. Then they went off George’s roadmap.

If you are one of the book fans, you might be aware that the ending of GoT does not follow Martin’s plans, as the author has previously mentioned that he doesn’t know how he will be ending the saga either.

Haas insisted that no one really knows who will sit at the Throne in the end. So, who knows, it might as well be Daenerys. Martin praised Emilia Clarke’s performance as Daenerys and added,

Emilia Clarke was great. The role of Daenerys is a difficult role … She suddenly grows from a girl to a woman and starts to realize that she does have power and authority. There’s a transformation that’s incredible the entire course of the show. [You have to find] an actress who can be very convincing as the scared little girl in the beginning, but also very convincing as the ‘I’m gonna kick your ass and burn your city to cinders’ woman that she becomes by the end.’ It’s challenging.

Even though this comment suggests that the books will also make Dany ‘The Mad Queen’ like the show did, which people believe destroyed her character’s arc, Martin has a different conclusion in mind.

In an interview with PBS in Chicago earlier in June, Martin had suggested that now that he knows the reaction the show’s ending received, he’s planning on straying further from it.

In the same interview, the author said that he wished he’d stayed “ahead of the books,” and even though the author didn’t think it was possible, the show eventually caught up to the books.

Martin is currently working on the sixth installment, The Winds of Winter, which will be followed by the seventh and final book, A Dream of Spring, that’ll wrap it all up.

While you wait for the books for another eternity, GoT prequel series House of the Dragon will air its first season in 2022 on HBO Max.

The first official teaser for the prequel has already promised more book-accurate designs, making it evident that Martin has a lot more involvement this time around.
