George R.R. Martin Accepts 5-year Deal from HBO for GoT Series

The mastermind behind Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin, has signed a five-year deal with HBO, where six series revisiting Westeros are developing.

The contract is for five years and worth the mid-eight figures, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter on Friday. HBO refused to comment on the details of the deal.

Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels fulfilled the basis for HBO’s Emmy-winning series. He is presently executive producing the network’s forthcoming prequel, House of the Dragon, which will premiere in 2022. HBO is simultaneously developing several other spinoffs, including ones for HBO Max.

House of the Dragon is set 300 years before the events of HBO’s fantasy epic. The 10-episode show is outlined in the early days of Westeros. It concentrates on House Targaryen, the family that Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) and her brothers Viserys (Harry Lloyd) and nephew Aegon Targaryen, aka Jon Snow (Kit Harington), belong to. The series is based on Martin’s book Fire & Blood, which details the origin of the Targaryens. House of the Dragon has been co-created by Martin and Colony co-creator Ryan Condal.

The series stars an ensemble cast including Paddy Considine, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, and Sonoya Mizuno.

A Renaissance man of entertainment, Martin is involved in more projects simultaneously than many of his younger contemporaries. Martin asserts he’s going to write the end of A Song of Ice and Fire (the planned sixth novel).

The Winds of Winter is presently a manuscript over 3,000 pages long and has yet to hit the market. Game of Thrones enthusiasts will rejoice at the closer alliance between Martin and HBO, but dedicated readers will have more reason to wail as they wait for the next book.
