Squid Game S2: Actor Lee Jung-Jae Hopes for an Unpredictable Story

2021 has been the year for Netflix, with their most significant hit being the South Korean thriller series Squid Game.

Unless you have been living under a rock, you know how the series exploded and people around the world were ironically united by Squid Game.

Fans have been hoping for Netflix to announce the news of a renewal ever since director Hwang Dong-hyuk announced that he was writing for Season 2.

The creator had revealed that he was considering a few different stories in the upcoming season, including the return of characters like the lead Gi-hun, the Frontman, the detective, and the salesman.

Actor Lee Jung-jae, who plays series protagonist Seong Gi-hun, recently talked to PEOPLE and said that he has a few ideas for his character’s fate, including a twist.

A second season has become inevitable in a way. I remember when we were shooting, I asked [creator Hwang Dong-hyuk] if there’d be a second season, and he said, ‘I don’t think so. That’s going to be very difficult.’ But we can’t not do one now because we’ve received so much love all across the world.

Season 1 had an open ending which would’ve left us all in turmoil had there been no updates about another season. Not to mention the other vague storylines, which felt like they were deliberately left that way in hopes of being explored further.

(I still believe Hwang Jun-ho is alive.)

Lee said he hoped for a twist, which won’t be a problem given how Season 1 was such a rollercoaster ride.

I hope there’s some sort of twist that’ll be exciting and surprising for me and the viewers. If it was predictable, it would be no fun. I have no idea what will happen or the scale of it, but the only thing [Hwang] did tell me was that Seong Gi-hun is going to be in the show again, and he’s going to be playing in the arena again.

Season 1 ended with Gi-hun deciding to go back when he realized he could never truly be free unless he broke this chain of exploitation. I believe seeing the salesman give him that so-you’re-the-one-who-made-it-this-time look may or may not have triggered this feeling.

Lee recalled back on his time filming the series and said that he had a feeling “it was going to be very big.” And as Netflix’s viewership records show (142 million views), Lee was right.

Hwang Dong-hyuk recently confirmed that he was in talks with Netflix to make not one but two more seasons for the series. Looks like the creator has something bigger than just Dalgona candies cooking up for the upcoming seasons.
