Glass Onion Director Expresses Concern Over Major Streaming Cancellation Trend

In a recent interview, Rian Johnson, the director of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, shared his thoughts on the trend of streamers canceling TV shows and films.

Despite having signed a deal with Netflix to direct two sequels to Knives Out, Johnson expressed concern about the recent developments in the streaming world. The first sequel, Glass Onion, was released on Netflix in December and received critical acclaim, including an Oscar nomination.

However, Johnson’s experience in the industry has made him aware of the potential dangers that the streaming landscape presents for content creators.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Johnson recently discussed the trend of streaming services canceling TV shows and movies.

The filmmaker, currently collaborating with Peacock, on the successful murder mystery series, Poker Face, expressed his apprehension regarding the trend.

He also advised other creatives to maintain a positive outlook despite this development. Read his statement below.

[Quote: It’s been horrifying. The fact that it’s becoming common practice is terrible and adds to the awfulness. In the history of the business, there has been a constant evolution of horrible things. All you can do as someone who makes stuff is ultimately put your faith in the notion that if you make something, it’s going to find its audience. ]

Glass Onion Director Expresses Concern Over Major Streaming Cancellations Trend
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Viewers and creators are worried about the high number of show and movie cancellations by popular streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney+, Paramount+, and HBO Max.

The platforms have not spared even popular shows like Batgirl, Julie and the Phantoms, and 1899.

Despite these concerns, there have been successful and highly acclaimed streaming productions such as Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, The Last of Us, and Wednesday.

However, the uncertainty of getting canceled still looms large among the makers, which is becoming a big concern.

This trend seems alarming but is a natural business progression and is expected to persist. It is primarily attributed to the current economic climate, cost-cutting measures, emphasis on quality content, and stiff competition.

Despite this, creators should remain optimistic about their work and trust that it will eventually find an audience.

On the flip side, cancellations can have a positive impact.

They put more pressure on TV shows and movies to be engaging and of higher quality right from the start rather than relying on filler episodes or a drawn-out season. As a result, shows such as Wednesday and The Last of Us are shorter and more relatable from the beginning.

Despite some hoping for fewer cancellations in the future, the reality is that streaming cancellations are a part of the evolution of the process. In this highly competitive and unpredictable environment, projects like Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery must prove their worth.
