‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ Writer Spills Whether a Sequel Is in the Future

Godzilla vs. Kong‘s screenwriter Max Borenstein discussed the future of the MonsterVerse franchise following the success of the newly released movie. Borenstein previously wrote the screenplays for 2014’s Godzilla and was a co-writer for Kong: Skull Island. Alongside Eric Pearson, he serves as a co-writer for Godzilla vs. Kong as well.

Now, in an interview with Collider, Borenstein has shared details about the possibility of a sequel or spinoffs for the MonsterVerse. In answer to reporter Steven Weintraub’s question about future plans, Borenstein stated that the initial goal was first to get Kong and Godzilla on the big screen, but now he doesn’t have any idea where things could go from here.

Even though he doesn’t drop indications of being associated with any other projects in the universe, he sure looks forward to future developments within the franchise. Read his full statement below:

“This is a point that has been a part of the ambition since the beginning, so I look forward to whatever the next iteration of this franchise is. This has certainly been getting these two characters, like The Avengers, you build to that place. That’s not to say there aren’t future movies that bring everyone together.”

Godzilla vs. Kong‘s success was a surprise indeed, especially considering the poor box-office results that its prequel received. Adam Wingard, the director, also recently confirmed that they had a post-credits scene cut, which would’ve teased the next film, perhaps due to that reason.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is the lowest-grossing film in the MonsterVerse. Since Legendary and Toho’s deal was supposed to end in 2020, the studio might’ve prepared Godzilla vs. Kong as the franchise’s endpoint.

However, now that it’s taken a different turn, there is still hope for the future. As the third-highest-grossing film of the year, garnering nearly $300 million worldwide and with a top review score on Rotten Tomatoes, Legendary might just change its mind.

About Godzilla vs. Kong

Godzilla vs. Kong is an American kaiju-action movie. It is a sequel to Godzilla: King of Monsters and Kong: Skull Island and is the latest entry in the WB-Legendary Monsterverse. The film stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and others.

Godzilla vs. Kong took in $285 million in just 12 days in theatres. As of now, it has grossed over $400 million, becoming the most successful movie in the pandemic era to date.

Humans have captured King Kong from Skull Island to help him find his true home. With them is Jia, a young orphaned girl with whom he has formed a unique and powerful bond. But Kong’s return comes just in time for Godzilla cutting a swath of destruction across the globe. As the fearsome monsters square off in an epic battle for the ages, humanity looks to wipe out both of them and take back the planet once and for all.
