Bojack Director Gives Golden Girls a Jetsons-Like Twist in New Episode

In a new surprise animated episode of The Golden Girls, director Mike Hollingsworth gave it a Jetsons-like twist by combining it with high-tech gadgets from the future. Hollingsworth is known for his work in the animated sitcom, Bojack Horseman.

The Golden Girls originally aired between 1985-1992 and consisted of an ensemble cast, including Betty White, Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty. The sitcom focused on the lives of four older women living together in Miami.

During its run, the series won numerous accolades and was followed by a continuation series and two spinoffs. However, The Golden Girls always remained the most loved among them all. The series will also soon get its own pop-up restaurant in Beverly Hills, owing to its legacy.

According to a preview posted by IndieWire, Mike Hollingsworth has given the popular sitcom a futuristic twist in a new animated episode, titled “The Golden Girls 3033”. In the pilot, the four women from the original series are still sharing a house.

The episode is set 100 years into the future, and their house is full of futuristic gadgets that look heavily inspired by The Jetsons. One of the gadgets is a fridge that delivers delights such as a “Dateless Dessert for One” or a “Lonely Lady Lasagna” with just the push of a button. Also, The Golden Girls’ Stan has become an incoherent alien.

The episode also cleverly combines the original audio from The Golden Girls with new animation.

The gadgets introduced in the episode are reminiscent of The Jetsons, but the animation style has improved to a great extent. Though the animation style is not similar to Hollingsworth’s previous popular animation, Bojack Horseman, the director tries to bear some likeness to the original show.

Though the effort is creative and commendable, a longer-form version of Golden Girls 3033 is yet to happen. Hollingsworth created the clip with the intention of earning a series order. The popularity of the pilot will determine whether he will land it or not.
