Daenerys’ Dragon Eggs May Be Linked to House of the Dragon

Dragons were pivotal to Daenerys’ arc in Game of Thrones. Not only did the dragons make her all-powerful, but it reignited her ambition to take over the Iron Throne. None of this would’ve been possible had Magister Illyrio Mopatis not gifted her three petrified dragon eggs for her marriage to Khal Drogo.

But how did Mopatis get his hands on these dragon eggs in the first place? The answer has to do with a dragon we’ll be seeing in House of the Dragon.

When Rhaena Targaryen was Dreamfyre’s rider, her close friend, Lady Elissa Farman, is said to have stolen three of the dragon’s eggs. She fled with the eggs to Braavos, where Illyrio Mopatis acquires them centuries later. It is speculated that Daenerys’ dragons are Dreamfyre’s children.

George R. R. Martin has stated that the events described in Fire & Blood shouldn’t be considered the absolute truth. This is because the historic recounting of the Targaryen House comes from many different (and often, biased) sources.

Still, it is quite a big coincidence that three of Dreamfyre’s eggs are stolen, and then, a few centuries later, Illyrio Mopatis shows up in GOT with three unclaimed eggs. So, let’s explore the whole tale.

Tracing the Lineage of Daenerys’ Dragons

All three of Daenerys’ dragons are speculated to be Dreamfyre’s children. Now, does the name Dreamfyre sound familiar? Well, she is a dragon who is still alive during the current timeline of House of the Dragon. Her rider in the show is Helaena Targaryen, and we may see the dragon at the end of S1 or in S2.

In HOTD Ep 2, Daemon also steals one of Dreamfyre’s eggs for his unborn child. Later, it is revealed that Daemon lied about the pregnancy and had to return the dragon egg.

But this was not the first time Dreamfyre’s eggs were stolen. Her previous rider was Rhaena Targaryen, the first granddaughter of Aegon the Conquerer. During this time, Rhaena’s close friend, Lady Elissa Farman, stole three of Dreamfrye’s eggs and then absconded to Braavos.

(Lady Elissa’s reasons for doing so are not known, although one can assume it’s to either be in possession of a dragon or to sell the egg for a heavy pouch of gold).

Although Rhaena pleaded with her brother, King Jaehaerys, to find the eggs, he does little to nothing about it. He wasn’t too scared about the eggs being stolen because he believed they can’t hatch or survive without Targaryens being around. Ultimately, the eggs were never recovered or found.

Now, 200-odd years later, we have Magister Illyrio Mopatis in possession of three eggs that were found in “the Shadow Lands beyond Asshai.” Neither in the books nor in the TV show is there any further explanation given as to how he found the eggs.

As a magister, Illyrio is rich and powerful enough to acquire any rare artifact he desires. His allied interest in the Targaryen restoration could be another motivation behind finding these eggs.

As per fan theory, the eggs that Lady Elissa stole somehow landed in Illyrio’s lap. As he supported Dany’s claim to the throne, he gifted the eggs to her as a sign of his allegiance. Perhaps he even hoped that the eggs would hatch in the presence of a true Targaryen dragon rider (as they did). While we don’t have explicit answers, Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion being Dreamfyre’s children is as canon as Jace, Luke, and Joffrey being Harwin Strong’s kids. That’s another pretty cool link between Daenerys and House of the Dragon!
