Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3: A Heartfelt Farewell for the Misfit Heroes

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 wraps up the story of the team that fans have loved since 2014. James Gunn, who wrote and directed the film, has made it clear that this is the last chapter for the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Their adventures have been some of the most significant in the MCU besides the Avengers, so fans can expect a lot of emotions from the conclusion of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Like other MCU movies that ended their individual series, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 also found a way to balance its story with setting up new plot points. Gunn gave fans a touching and satisfying end, but he also left some doors open for future MCU stories.

If you have had some questions (and rightly so) about the ending of the film and needed some inputs about it, be rest assured you’re at the right place. In this article, we’ll talk about everything that happened at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and what it suggests for the future of the MCU.

1. What happens to High Evolutionary in GOTG 3?

The High Evolutionary is a super villain who wants to change the genes of every creature in the universe. He thinks he can make them better by removing their flaws and making them more like him.

He does this by using his science and machines to hurt and experiment on them. One of his motives is to create a superior race that he can control and rule over. Another motive is to play God and challenge nature and evolution.

High Evolutionary

He does not care about the suffering or feelings of his victims, he only cares about his vision of perfection3. Rocket used to be one of his victims, so he fights him with the Guardians and brings him down.

The Guardians beat the High Evolutionary at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He runs away after they fight him on his ship, but he comes back in the end.

He traps Rocket in the place where he kept him and hurt him before. The Guardians fight him again and everyone helps to stop him. Rocket says he is a Guardian and does not kill him, but he dies anyway when the ship blows up with him inside.

2. Is High Evolutionary really dead?

No one knows for sure if the High Evolutionary died when his ship blew up. He was alone on the ship, but they never showed his body or him dying in Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

Some people might wonder if he could come back in the MCU later. Maybe he had a backup plan or a way to live forever with his machines, but that is not likely.

The return of High Evolutionary would ruin the end of the Guardians’ story, and Rocket’s happy ending in the movie. I don’t think that’s what Gunn had in mind while making this film, since the idea behind it was to provide closure. But anything can happen in the MCU and with the multiverse theory now, you never know.

3. The Guardians Save High Evolutionary’s Creations

A big part of the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was about the team helping the High Evolutionary’s victims. He had kids and animals that he hurt and changed to make them better. The Guardians helped them get out in the end.

They did this with Knowhere, their home that can fly like a big ship. Kraglin brought Knowhere to where the Guardians were, and the victims got to stay on Knowhere with Nebula and Drax who would take care of them.

4. What happens to the Guardians in GOTG 3?

A lot of people were wondering what would happen to the Guardians of the Galaxy in their third movie. Some thought that Rocket, Quill, or Drax would die, and others were curious about how they would deal with the old version of Gamora. Luckily, James Gunn did a good job of giving each character a good ending with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

1. Gamora

Gamora decides to go back to the Ravagers who are her new family instead of staying with Quill. Many people thought they would get back together after the old Gamora came back in Avengers: Endgame, but the movie shows that Peter and Gamora’s love is not simple.

Gamora says she is not the same as the old Gamora because she did not live her experience, and Peter understands he cannot make her love him again. Gamora, then, goes back to the Ravagers who are her new family instead of the Guardians.

2. Drax and Nebula

Drax and Nebula decide to stay on Knowhere with the High Evolutionary’s test subjects. Drax finds out that his daughter is still alive and was one of the children that the High Evolutionary experimented on.

He reunites with her and vows to protect her and the other kids. Nebula bonds with Rocket over their shared trauma and becomes a mentor to the animal victims. She also helps Drax with his daughter and the children. Drax and Nebula form a new family on Knowhere and say goodbye to the Guardians.

3. Star Lord

Star Lord accepts Gamora’s decision to leave him and respects her new life. He realizes that he still loves her, but he cannot force her to feel the same. He also learns to let go of his guilt over his father’s death and his role in the Infinity War.

He also reconnects with his grandfather, who was one of the High Evolutionary’s test subjects. Though Quill does retire from being a Guardian and passes on the batten to Rocket, this is not the end of his character. The post-credit scene of Vol. 3 specifically mentions that Quill will return, though we are not sure how and when.

5. The Post-Credit Scene Teases the New Guardians

When Quill says he is done with the Guardians, he makes Rocket the new boss of the team. The first post-credit scene of the movie shows who is on the new Guardians of the Galaxy team.

Rocket and Groot are still together, because they are best friends since the first movie. Kraglin and Cosmo are also on the team, because they helped a lot to stop the High Evolutionary in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The end of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 also features two new Guardians: Adam Warlock and Phylla-Vell. Adam Warlock was a bad guy in the movie, but he changed his mind after his mom died and the Guardians were nice to him. So, he joined the new Guardians of the Galaxy with Rocket as the leader.

Phylla-Vell was one of the kids that the Guardians saved from the High Evolutionary and she is like a character from the Marvel Comics. Phylla-Vell was a Guardian in the comics, and also had other names like Quasar and Captain Marvel, which could mean she will do more things in the MCU later.

6. What The Ending of GOTG Vol. 3 Means for the MCU

The end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 shows that Star-Lord is back and there is a new Guardians team. This could mean a lot for the MCU’s future. For future stories, the end of the movie means that there is still a Guardians team in the MCU, so they can help if needed.

This could be important for either Avengers: The Kang Dynasty or Avengers: Secret Wars. Both movies will be very big like Infinity War and Endgame before them, so it is possible the new Guardians could join to help with Rocket as the leader.

The Marvels is one of the next movies in Phase 5. It is about Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau and their space adventure. Phylla-Vell is on the new Guardians team, and she has a connection to Captain Marvel in the comics, so the new space Guardians might show up in that movie. Also, Mantis leaves Guardians of the Galaxy 3 to see the galaxy, which could mean she might be in another movie in Phase 5 or 6.

The Avengers live on Earth, where Star-Lord seems to stay now. Marvel Studios says he will keep doing MCU things, so maybe he could be a hero on Earth with the other Avengers. Anyway, it is clear that both of these things will matter in Phase 6 and later.

7. GOTG Vol. 3 Offers A Perfect Ending to the Guardians

The end of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 means a lot, because it ends the story well. Even though some things are still open for later, this version of the Guardians is done.

The movie shows how each character ends their story, from Drax and Nebula taking care of the kids to Gamora finding a family and Quill making peace with his, the end of the movie really means the end for the Guardians that started in 2014.

This is shown well by Rocket’s story, which makes the whole movie emotional and makes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 one of the best MCU movies since Avengers: Endgame.
