Writer-director duo The Russo Brothers have shared their take on the similarities between their first MCU project, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and their latest project with Netflix, The Gray Man.
Considered one of the most well-written and directed MCU films ever, Captain America: The Winter Soldier was the Russo Brothers’ ticket to creating more projects under the Marvel banner. They ended up directing three more MCU films after that—Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
If Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) was creatively their best, Avengers: Endgame (2019) blew through everyone’s expectations and became the highest-grossing film of all time, later toppled over by the re-release of Avatar. But with Endgame’s blockbuster success, the Russo Brothers had made their mark on the superhero genre and returned to their roots.
Before taking the helm of Winter Soldier, the Russo Brothers had stuck to creating sitcoms like Community and Arrested Development. Now taking a break from their superhero films, they have decided to focus on heroes who aren’t super and have returned with Netflix’s new project, The Gray Man.
The Gray Man, based on Mark Greaney’s 2002 novel of the same name, features a CIA agent who learns the dirty secrets of the supposed good guys and has to go on the run to escape his former work colleagues.
An innocent man framed wrongly? A dangerous mission against the world? Trying to expose an intelligence agency as the bad guy and being declared a criminal to cover up a possible truth reveal? If all this sounds familiar, you have seen this previously in The Winter Soldier.
The 2022 film stars Ryan Gosling as CIA agent Court Gentry, the hero who has put his life at stake to show the mask behind which his organization lies. Chris Evans takes the opposite role of the hero-like Captain America and plays the villain’s role, Lloyd Hansen. The film also stars Regé-Jean Page, Ana de Armas, Alfre Woodard, and Billy Bob Thorton.
In an interview with Screen Rant, the Russo brothers discussed the similarities in the movie and explained the consistency in the story with Winter Soldier.
They’re companion pieces in a lot of ways. They’re action-thrillers that deal with very current thematics [like] espionage and deal with characters with very emotionally complex situations. And they’re both globe-trotting.
The Russo Brothers also explain that they were writing Gray Man while shooting Winter Soldier, which explains the story and their choice of actor in Chris Evans. But after extending their contract with Marvel, they had to shelve the Gray Man for a while.
The Gray Man is not the only film in which the Russo Brothers have reunited with their MCU stars. Netflix’s Extraction, in which they had a hand in the writing process, starred Thor actor Chris Hemsworth and Cherry featured Spiderman: Far From Home actor Tom Holland.

The Gray Man is an American action thriller film directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who both produced the film with Mike Larocca, from a screenplay co-written with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Mark Greaney.
