Gwendoline Christie’s First Look as The Sandman’s Cherubic Lucifer

Forget Game of Thrones. After you see these first looks, you’re only going to remember Gwendoline Christine for playing Lucifer in The Sandman.

Christie’s appearance is much more faithful to Gaiman’s comics, with the golden hair done in curls, soft features, and overall angelic appearance. Of course, don’t get fooled by it; her batty black wings are to her sides, casting a shadow of a pair of horns on her face.

The tweet is captioned, “What power have dreams in Hell?” — a direct dig to the Sandman himself, who is the King of Dreams.

Canonically, Lucifer’s first encounter with Dream is when the latter is in Hell to get hold of his helmet. Lucifer poses this rhetoric, implying that although Dream may have entered hell and was capable of fighting off demons, he was not really free to leave Hell without Lucifer’s permission.

Of course, Dream being Dream chooses to respond with, “What power would hell have if those imprisoned here would not be able to dream of heaven?”

This comeback angers Lucifer to no end, and he vows that the next time he faces Dream, he will destroy him.

Over time, however, Lucifer as such does not really meddle with Dream. He is exhausted by how everyone treats him, playing into stereotypes and prejudices of being the devil.

And so, Lucifer simply gives up control over Hell and hands the key to Dream, noting that this would be a different way of “destroying” him.

Still, it seems that Season 1 of The Sandman will focus on when Lucifer and Dream were adversaries, notably adapting the comic’s first and second volumes, “Preludes & Nocturnes” and “The Doll’s House.”

The specifics of characters’ genders, personalities, and plots were also readdressed to tailor Dream escaping imprisonment in 2021, as opposed to 1989 as per the comics.

This is how Christie’s version of Lucifer also came to be. And I have full faith that she is going to ace it!
