HBO Max To Drop A Harry Potter Reunion Special On New Year’s Eve

Has an owl delivered your Hogwarts letter yet? Because it’s time to go back to the wizarding world.

Harry Potter, the boy with the scar, first appeared onto our screens when Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (aka Sorcerer’s for the US)was released in 2001.

Back then, just like little kids everywhere around the world, I dreamt of crashing into a wall, hoping it would take me to some magical world. Sadly, I eventually realized that was not a ‘realistic’ wish and had to cling to the magic of the eight movies instead.

It’s hard to believe, but it has been twenty years since then, and just when it felt like everything had been done and dusted, HBO Max announced a special event to celebrate this milestone.

The company released an official trailer announcing the reunion event, titled Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, which will feature the iconic trio – Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson.

The special “will tell an enchanting making-of story through all-new in-depth interviews and cast conversations, inviting fans on a magical first-person journey through one of the most beloved film franchises of all time.”

The actors will be joined by filmmaker Chris Columbus to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first film in the franchise.

Other cast members joining the tribute include Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Gary Oldman, Imelda Staunton, Tom Felton, James Phelps, Oliver Phelps, Mark Williams, Bonnie Wright, Alfred Enoch, Matthew Lewis, and Evanna Lynch, among others.

The retrospective will premiere on HBO Max on New Year’s Eve, i.e., midnight on January 1.

An exclusive first look at the special will debut during the premiere of Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Houses on November 28 (8:00 p.m. ET/PT) on TBS and Cartoon Network.

A press release made by Warner Media announced that the special will also debut on TBS and Cartoon Network in spring 2022 ahead of the third Fantastic Beasts film’s April 15 release.

However, it is curious that the creator of the wizarding world herself, JK Rowling, wasn’t mentioned anywhere. The author will not be a part of the event, presumably, due to her controversial views regarding the trans community.

President of Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics, Tom Ascheim, said in the statement,

It has been an incredible journey since the debut of the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone film, and witnessing how it has evolved into this remarkable interconnected universe has been magical, to say the least. This retrospective is a tribute to everyone whose lives were touched by this cultural phenomenon—from the talented cast and crew who poured their heart and soul into this extraordinary film
