Chris Columbus Wants To Adapt Harry Potter and The Cursed Child Movie

As a part of Harry Potter’s 20th-anniversary special, Chris Columbus expresses that he is interested in adapting Harry Potter and the Cursed Child for the screen.

The magic began with the first book, The Sorcerer’s Stone, released in 1997. In 2021, we’re not celebrating the book’s 20th anniversary, but its silver screen adaptation which took place in 2001.

On this occasion, Chris Columbus, who directed the first two Harry Potter movies, spoke to Variety on a range of topics, right from pitching the adaptation to JK Rowling to his favorite moment in the film. Pssh, it’s this one:

I’m not going home, not really
I’m not going home, not really

When asked if he thought there would be any more Harry Potter universe movies (akin to the prequel series of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them), Columbus’ first and only answer was Cursed Child.

I would love to direct “The Cursed Child.” It’s a great play and the kids are actually the right age to play those roles. It’s a small fantasy of mine.

And by kids, he obviously means the now grown-up Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and others, whose adult Harry Potters personas are featured in Cursed Child as well. It would indeed be nostalgic if the actors did reprise their roles to play older versions of their characters.

Plus, I can’t help but pick up that this may be a project that is quite close to Columbus’ heart and certainly one that he has given some thought to.

But will Warner Bros adapt Cursed Child for the screen? Although the play itself had gotten die-hard fans divided over how the characters and events were portrayed, it did decently on London’s West End, Broadway, and other international locations.

Earlier, rumors were floating around about a Harry Potter HBO series in development, which HBO’s Chief Casey Bloys then denied. Nevertheless, it points to the fervent excitement towards anything Harry Potter that continues 20-plus years into its legacy.

It wouldn’t be crass to say that a Cursed Child movie is something Warner Bros could consider. Chris Columbus, who kickstarted Harry Potter’s silver screen reign, is definitely all ears.

About Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

The play is marketed as the eighth story in the Harry Potter series.
