Has Grey’s Anatomy been renewed or canceled for Season 20?

Grey’s Anatomy S19 is currently in its midseason hiatus and will only return late in February. This breather space has given fans enough time to speculate about whether or not the show will have another season.

While the show is well-loved and has had a successful run, S19 was quite different without the booming presence of Ellen Pompeo, which was replaced by the introduction of a slew of new characters. Will these factors lead to Grey’s Anatomy getting canceled? Will Grey’s Anatomy be renewed for S20?

As of January 2023, Grey’s Anatomy has not been renewed for Season 20. However, there’s no news about its cancelation either, which points to a renewal in the future.

Grey’s Anatomy is quite the legacy show, so it won’t have a sudden cancelation. As there is no news out yet about its future, let’s look into whether or not we get S20.

How likely is it for Grey’s Anatomy to get canceled after S19?

If you don’t want a sugar-coated answer, Season 19 hasn’t performed that well. It has suffered a 14% decrease in viewership and a 22% decrease in terms of demography in comparison to Season 18.

What doesn’t help the situation either is that the franchise’s star Ellen Pompeo has reduced her involvement in the show by quite a lot. It’s clear that certain fans may have abandoned the show due to this factor alone.

Now to account for the positives: S19 has introduced an impressive new cast made up of Harry Shum Jr., Adelaide Kane, Alexis Floyd, Niko Terho, and Midori Francis. All of them have super interesting stories and have been well-received by viewers.

It’s possible that the show is aiming for a bait and switch, conditioning viewers to say goodbye to certain legacy characters while opening up a new chapter with the intern team. The tagline for Season 19 is literally “Begin Again,” which gives a lot of clues about the show’s intentions.

Plus, Pompeo is not fully absent—she’s still on for guest appearances and narrations.

A show that’s been running for so long won’t be canceled abruptly without being given a chance for a proper farewell. So, as bad as the negatives are, in contrast to S19’s positives, it seems like Grey’s Anatomy will live on for at least another season.

Watch this space, we’ll be updating with more Grey’s Anatomy S20 news as soon as it’s out!
