First Image Of HBO Max’s The Last Of Us Does The Video Game Justice

Fans of The Last of Us are going to be super proud of the HBO Max adaptation’s first image. It looks straight out of the video game!

Neil Druckmann released the picture as part of The Last Of Us Day celebration. Druckmann, writer and developer for both the video game and TV Show, expressed his excitement at finally seeing his characters come to life.

Eager to have a look at The Last of Us’ first release? Here you go:

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in costume are pictured from behind, preparing to traverse across an open plain. There’s also debris of a crashed plane in view. I know, I know — You can’t see Joel and Ellie’s faces yet. But how freakishly accurate is this shot?

Even fans agree:

In a society plagued by an apocalyptic illness, the video game is about Joel, a smuggler tasked to escort a 14-year-old immune Ellie across a quarantined zone.

Although there’s no telling which part of the story this TV show shot is from, it’s more likely to be from the first few episodes as filming for the pilot episode is wrapped up.

Plus, thanks to social media updates, we were informed that filming had started in late July. A few sneaky shots of the sets have also made the rounds:

The above stills are Boston’s quarantined zone where Joel worked as a smuggler for 20 years. Once again, its likeness to the games is unparalleled. While most video game adaptations tend to bomb on-screen, the sincerity put into The Last of Us has already gotten fans excited.

With Druckmann’s massive involvement in the show (rumored to also be in directing capacities as well), fingers crossed that it will indeed capture the video game’s essence.

The Last of Us is slated to be 10 episodes long and is expected to debut sometime in 2022.
