New GoT Prequel About Aegon the Conqueror in Early Development at HBO

After the success of HBO Max’s Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, HBO is looking at introducing other spinoff prequels to the fantasy series. House of the Dragon focused on the Targaryen line and the civil war between Rhaenyra and her brother Aegon.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the Targaryen storyline was a massive hit among the GoT fans. And now there’s another show in the works featuring the beginning of the Targaryen house.

Sources confirm to Variety that a new prequel is underway at HBO, centering around Aegon the Conqueror and his quest to unite the seven kingdoms under House Targaryen. The name is familiar since the Conqueror has been mentioned several times in both GoT & HOTD.

Aegon I Targaryen & Visenya and Rhaenys

The show is currently in development, but with no writer attached, there’s not much news to follow the confirmation. But as soon as a team of writers joins the series, we can expect new information regarding the title and plot for the second Game of Thrones prequel.

Let me give you a refresher course on Aegon I Targaryen. Aegon and his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys had dominion over dragons of the old due to their special bloodline. They raged war, riding upon their loyal dragons Balerion, Vhagar, and Maraxes, and conquered the seven kingdoms, ruling over the empire under their Iron Throne.

His pure bloodline dwindled to Jaehaerys Targaryen, as we saw in House of the Dragon in the first episode, who passed on his throne to Viserys. Viserys’ children, Rhaenyra and Aegon, will continue their battle in the confirmed season 2 of House of the Dragon, which will bring forth the fall of the Targaryen House.

It makes sense for HBO’s next GoT spinoff to be a prequel about the beginning of the reign of the Targaryens since HOTD will cover their demise. The studio is also planning the franchise’s first potential feature film, which will tie to the upcoming prequel. This fits Martin’s plan to make an interconnected universe like the MCU and Star Wars.

HBO has declined any comment on Variety’s report, but we can expect an official greenlight anytime now. Are you excited about a spinoff series detailing the beginning of the Targaryen line in the world of Game of Thrones? Drop your views in the comments.
