Succession Season 4 Ending: Who is the Winner –Shiv, Kendall, or Roman?

Since HBO confirmed season 4 of Succession would be its last, the show’s audience has kept a keen eye on the power rankings to speculate who will come out on the top of the race for Waystar Royco. By the final episodes, it seemed like Lukas Matsson would get his way and GoJo would take over, which is precisely what happened with Shiv’s help.

Shiv has been keeping herself on Lukas’ good side because his acquisition of the Roy family company was inevitable. For a while, it was going in her favor, too, since after the penultimate episode of the final season, it seemed like Shiv would end up winning this game. But the series finale flipped the tables in a final twist ending for the HBO show.

Kendall struggled to get the majority votes from the board of directors while the two siblings visited a broken Roman. While they were in Barbados, Matsson interviewed Tom for the CEO position, which Greg leaked to the siblings, and they rushed back to the company. The three discuss and agree to let Kendall share their votes so the company will stay in the family.

But alas, Kendall has been on a losing streak ever since the presidential election turned over for Mencken. At the meeting, Matsson reveals that Tom will be CEO, and keeping that in mind, as well as the fact that Kendall wasn’t ready for the job, Shiv and Roman cast their vote against their brother.

Kendall and Roman

God, the look on Kendall’s face. His solitary moment at the river only shows how lost and incomplete he feels after losing his father’s company after all he’s done to keep it. Ultimately, no one truly wins among the siblings, but Kendall and Roman are the real losers. Why? I’ll tell you!

Shiv was the clear choice for Waystar Royco’s CEO after she negotiated a deal between Matsson and Mencken, and Matsson would have been content giving her the position. But after seeing a sketch of Shiv pulling his puppet strings online and assessing the end of her usefulness in acquiring her family company, he thought it was better to cast her aside.

Choosing Tom, Matsson made sure he could control the company’s reins, but Shiv was one step ahead of him on that front – let me explain. Though Tom and Shiv’s marriage had not improved its shaky ground, they stayed married by the show’s end.

Not because they still love each other – I mean their dead eyes speak for themselves as they held hands. Shiv knows just how easily Tom can be manipulated, and she intends to play the CEO’s role from behind the scenes with keeping her marriage with the current CEO.

With her still having a modicum of control over the company and her unborn child possibly getting it after Tom, she ensured the company would stay in the family, which was one of the late Logan Roy’s deepest wishes. So, in the end, Tom might be the winner of Succession, but Shiv’s the true champion.

Thus, a tale of greed and hunger for power comes to an unhappy ending for the Roy family, with two left devoid of hope and one left with no real shot at happiness despite getting everything she wanted. A satisfactory end to Succession, I must say! What did you make of the series finale of the HBO drama? Leave your views in the comments.
