Henry Cavill Promises Geralt Will Be More Book-Accurate In Witcher S2

Henry Cavill is already the perfect Geralt on screen. He dishes out that for The Witcher Season 2, he has worked hard on aligning his character as close to the books as possible.

You may be surprised to know that before taking on the role, Cavill had only played The Witcher video games, as opposed to having read the books. Talking to Total Films, he reveals that he spent a good part of the lockdown revisiting the games that had initially piqued his interest in the franchise.

Just like Cavill, the video games have been a gateway for many fans’ into the wondrous world of The Witcher. (If you were thinking of giving the games a go too, Cavill does warn that the hardest difficulty level is quite stressful!)

Now Cavill has decided to take Geralt’s portrayal a notch higher, stating that in Season 2, we will see him for the intellectual he is.

Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia

This season, I really wanted to make sure that we represented the book’s Geralt more accurately, and that we saw him speak more. I pushed really, really hard for that. I wouldn’t say cheery. He’s still Geralt of Rivia, but he’s definitely coming across as more of an intellectual. It’s a hard life, monster hunting… I wouldn’t recommend it.

Indeed, in the first season, Geralt had been a man of very few words, resorting to communicate in grunts instead. But the witcher did not come all this way, being the ace monster hunter that he is, without his extensive expertise and near-death experiences.

Geralt in the novels has always done his best to avoid getting tangled in political agenda and emotional commitments. But unwittingly gaining custody of Ciri as his ward pushes him to explore the fatherly side of his personality.

In Season 2, now that he has to train Ciri and protect all his loved ones from the perils of the war to come, Geralt will have to take off his asocial cloak in order to establish a strong allyship.

Hearing more from the on-screen Geralt is an excellent sign of character development. After all, it might get a little stale if Geralt continued to remain the same, despite all the new, exciting storylines that surround him.

But as Cavill puts it, he is still Geralt of Rivia — he won’t break into song and dance, but we’re sure to be treated to his usual bouts of dry wit and an occasional smile.

The Witcher Season 2 will premiere on Netflix on December 17.
