‘HIMYM’ Spinoff ‘How I Met Your Father’ Happening with Hillary Duff

A much-awaited How I Met Your Mother spinoff series, How I Met Your Father, is coming to Hulu with Hilary Duff set to star.

Created by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, the CBS sitcom was hugely popular through its nine-season run. It even went on to become one of the most-watched comedy series of the past few decades. The intention of a HIMYM spinoff has been rumored for some time, and it seems like the project is now eventually going to happen.

Featuring Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan, and Jason Segel, the series narrated the story of five adult friends living and looking for love (often with one another) in New York City. Identical in style and structure to Friends, the series won a large following early on and steered successfully for a decade. However, the show’s upsetting ending was a letdown for many fans, sending the hugely popular series out on a low note. However, there’s no denying that the show was a cultural phenomenon during most of its run.

The spinoff series ordered by Hulu, How I Met Your Father will be a ten-episode series starring Hilary Duff as Sophie, one of several close friends looking for love in the age of dating apps.

Duff will also co-produce the series alongside creators Aptaker and Berger. How I Met Your Mother’s actual creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will fulfill the role of executive producers.

Although it was extremely successful while on air, the show hasn’t aged well. Barney’s constant predatory attitude towards women (which was generally played off as a joke in the show) is particularly problematic. Hopefully, How I Met Your Father will adopt the style and character dynamics fans loved about the original while renouncing the callous humor that often plagued it.

The adult friends sitcom genre has changed significantly since How I Met Your Mother, and it appears like the new show has the potential to catch up with the times. It will be intriguing to see how the spinoff ends up connecting to the original series when it releases on Hulu.

How I Met Your Mother is an American sitcom, created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays for CBS. The series ran from 2005 to 2014 and stars Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris, Alysson Hannigan and Jason Segel in lead roles. 

It follows the main character, Ted Mosby, and his group of friends in New York City’s Manhattan. As a framing device, Ted, in the year 2030, recounts to his son, Luke, and daughter, Penny, the events from 2005 to 2013 that led him to meet their mother.
