His Dark Materials season 2 finale episode premiered on December 28th, 2020, on HBO, and not shortly after its release; the series got renewed for a third and final season.
The fantasy series is based on Phillip Pullman’s fantasy novel trilogy His Dark Materials. It is produced by Bad Wolf and New Line Productions for BBC One and HBO networks, the latter responsible for international distribution.
The series is closely centered around Lyra Belacqua (or Lyra Silvertongue) from another world, where Dust is not just dirt we can sweep off.
Season 2 of the series closely followed the sophomore finale novel The Subtle Knight. It continues to follow the adventures of Lyra (Dafne Keen), her daemon pan (animal manifestation of one’s inner-self), and her mother, Mrs. Coulter (Ruth Wilson).
Lyra sets out on a journey to a mysterious abandoned city and meets Will Parry (Amir Wilson) from our world, where daemons are non-existent, and Dust is, well, Dust. Their paths get deeply intertwined as they uncover some shocking revelations about Lyra and her destiny.
His Dark Materials season 2 cast also includes Will Keen, Ariyon Bakare, and Ruta Gedmintas, to name a few. The Executive producers include Jane Tranter, Joel Collins, Dan McCulloch, Phillip Pullman, and Jack Thorne.
“Bringing Phillip Pullman’s epic, intricate and culturally resonant body of work to television has been a tremendous privilege,” Said Francesca Orci, the executive Vice President of HBO programming.
“We thank our incredible partners at the BBC and the entire Bad Wolf team, led by the indefatigable Jane Tranter, for their exceptional work on the first two seasons. We look forward to completing the trilogy with this final chapter in Lyra’s journey,” Orci added.
The series is renewed for its third and final season. It will closely follow the final installment of His Dark Materials trilogy, The Amber Spyglass. The 8-episode season will begin its production in 2021 summer in Cardiff.
His Dark Materials is available on Disney + Hotstar premium and HBO Max for streaming.
