Hollywood Survey Shows Continued Harassment Even After the #MeToo Movement

The advocacy group, Women in Film, conducted a survey from September 21 to October 3, 2022, on the fifth anniversary of Harvey Weinstein’s exposal, which kicked off the #MeToo Movement.

A cursory movement in modern culture that started five years ago, this initiative struck to call out and expose the big names of many industries, holding them responsible for the abuse and misconduct they perpetrated. According to Women in Film’s 2022 survey there has only been a slight improvement in Hollywood’s harassment cycle.

The #MeToo movement’s importance is not to be slighted, since many predators were recognized and penalized for their misconduct due to the power of social media backed by legal decisions.

But the aforementioned survey, which includes the responses of both current and retired Hollywood employees, has highlighted that harassment has only “improved somewhat.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a report submitted by WIF has concluded that the #MeToo movement’s success though notable, has been stunted.

One hundred seventy-four individuals took part in the survey, chiefly women (93.6 percent), and above 70 percent of the majority have conceded that there is some improvement in the culture around abuse and harassment in Hollywood.

But more than 69 percent of respondents have admitted to experiencing such misconduct in the last five years, and another 30.9 percent have said they know someone facing such mistreatment.

Of the previous percentile, 55 percent of the respondents were people of color who had personally experienced harassment in five years that followed #MeToo Movement.

The Women in Film group has also released anonymous anecdotes of the industry’s employees along with the survey. Some of these anecdotes paint a grim picture where harassment is still a part of their workplace environment.

One such comment has also highlighted that how even unions discourage calling out such behavior lest the careers of the victims are damaged.

The only conclusion that can be reached after this survey is that the #MeToo movement was not the end of such trials, but only the beginning of a long but necessary fight. The path leading to safer work environment is a long one and although the progress is slow, but it’s still significant.
