House of the Dragon Might Explore Various Targaryen Eras in Anthology Format

House of the Dragon showrunner Miguel Sapochnik recently discussed the possibility of the series exploring different eras of the Targaryan dynasty in subsequent seasons on the show.

Viewers were first introduced to the Targaryen dynasty in the 2011 series, Game of Thrones, based on George R.R. Martin’s best-selling book series, A Song of Ice and Fire. House of the Dragon is a spinoff of Game of Thrones, considered one of the best television series of all time.

House of the Dragon is based on George R.R Martin’s book following the rise and fall of the Targaryen dynasty, titled Fire and Blood. While Game of Thrones mainly focused on the story of Daenerys, the daughter of Aerys II Targaryen (better known as the Mad King), HOTD is all set to explore previous generations of the Targaryens.

Season 1 of House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. It will follow the history of the Targaryens, leading to a civil war, a Dance of Dragons, which is supposed to be a major reason for the family’s downfall and destruction. Season 1 will consist of 10 episodes.

In an interview with EW at the recently held San Diego Comic-Con, showrunner Sapochnik discussed the future of House of the Dragon beyond Season 1.

Sapochnik was asked whether Martin’s Fire and Blood might facilitate an anthology format for the series, to which he responded positively. Check out his response to the question below.

Absolutely. I think that’s one of the interesting things about the Targaryens. We’ve chosen a story that’s almost like Star Wars: Episode IV. It’s the New Hope. We can go backward; we can go forwards. There are a lot of opportunities there. I hope we’ve been given the opportunity to set up something.

Martin’s Fire and Blood is a detailed account of the history of the Targaryens, beginning with Aegon I’s conquest of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and ending with the reign of Aegon III. Instead of sticking to just a particular period or the civil war, the makers could explore various generations and periods of the family.

This would be a fresh take on the source material and prove to be different from Game of Thrones, especially since comparison to the original show is inevitable in the case of spinoffs.

Viewers would be particularly eager to watch the reign of Aerys II Targaryen or the Mad King, whom Robert Baratheon overthrew with Ned Stark’s assistance, during Robert’s rebellion. This era could also explore the love story of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, Jon Snow’s biological parents.

House of the Dragon Season 2 is very likely to happen, though HBO is yet to renew the series for a second season officially. A renewal would also depend on the success of Season 1 and viewers’ response to the same.

House of the Dragon premieres on HBO Max on August 21.
