‘Hourman’ Rumours Confirmed: New DCEU Movie in Development

Warner Bros. and DC Films are developing a new movie for Hourman, written by Gavin James and Neil Widener.

The character first emerged when Ken Fitch and Bernard Baily introduced him in Adventure Comics #48 in 1940. The original Hourman is known as Rex Tyler, a chemist who develops a synthesis that gives him some superpowers for one hour only. Later, Rex’s son Rick Tyler took over the mantle and is the more widely recognized version of Hourman. There is also an android modeled after Rex, by the name Matthew Tyler.

For the last few years, WB and DC worked tirelessly to build a mega-popular movie universe with DC characters. The original plan with Zack Snyder was confirmed after Man of Steel‘s release and included movies through 2020. The studios are now moving forward with a DC Extended Universe that likely won’t involve the filmmaker after Zack Snyder’s Justice League‘s release on HBO Max.

Currently, there are dozens of DC movies in various stages of development, but only some of them have official release dates. Apart from the Snyder Cut, The Suicide Squad is the only movie slated for release in 2021. The Batman, The Flash, and Aquaman 2 have a 2022 release date, while 2023 only has Shazam: Fury of the Gods. Presently, the studios are moving forward with plans for another DC movie.

As reported by Deadline, the DC hero, Hourman, is getting a movie of his own. Gavin James and Neil Widener will write the movie (San Andreas 2, Now You See Me 3). A few different characters have taken on the Hourman mantle in the comics. So far, it’s uncertain which character will be at the center of the solo movie.

Along with WB and DC, Chernin Entertainment, the production company behind the Planet of the Apes reboot, will also produce Hourman.

Reportedly, DC and The CW previously had hopes of giving Hourman a show in the Arrowverse. Although those plans never came to fruition, one version of Hourman did materialize in the popular small-screen universe. Patrick J. Adams played the Rex Tyler version of Hourman in two episodes of Legends of Tomorrow.

Lou Ferrigno Jr. and Cameron Gellman also played Rex and Rick in Stargirl. But there’s still a long way to go before fans will potentially learn what version of the character will be at the center of this movie, who will portray him, or when the film will be released.

About Hourman

Hourman or Hour-Man is the name of three different fictional superheroes appearing in comics published by DC Comics, which is currently being adapted as a movie. The original Hourman was created by writer Ken Fitch and artist Bernard Baily in Adventure Comics #48 (April 1940), during the Golden Age of Comic Books. The first Hourman is chemist Rex Tyler, who creates a new synthesis, “Miraclo”, which grants him super-strength and endurance, but only for one hour.

Rex Tyler made his live-action debut in the season one finale of The CW series DC’s Legends of Tomorrow portrayed by Patrick J. Adams. Both Rex and Rick Tyler also appear in the DC Universe series Stargirl portrayed by Lou Ferrigno Jr. and Cameron Gellman respectively.
