House of the Dragon Episode 10: Release Date, Recap, and Speculation

Penultimate episode of House of the Dragon, Season 1, has marked and placed all the pawns and players of team Green and Black and with Aegon on the Iron Throne, things are about to get messy.

Even though Rhaenys has flown to warn the Blacks, and Alicent claims violence can be avoided, the bloody Dance of Dragons will commence in Episode 10. The upcoming season 1 finale will mark the beginning of the end of the House of Targaryen.

1. Episode 10 Synopsis/Speculation

By episode 10, Rhaenys will have arrived at Dragonstone with news of the usurping, and the civil war will begin in earnest.

Episode 9 has set both sides apart and has made clear where the loyalties lie. The following episode will transport viewers to Dragonstone, where Rhaenyra and Daemon will strategize how to regain the throne.

Like Alicent, Rhaenyra wishes to avoid bloodshed. But like her ex-friend, Rhaenyra is also protective of her family and must do whatever it takes to keep them safe. Some would advise her to lay siege to the Red Keep, but she will try the non-violent path first.

Unknown to her, she will face the first immense tragedy of the Dance of the Dragons when Aemond kills Jacerys at Storm’s End.

The episode 10 preview has laid this much bare, and it’s pretty apparent that this detail from the book will remain unchanged in the show. And that’s when the civil war will take a bloody turn.

Episode 10 may also feature a new prophecy from Helaena.

The preview has shown many dragons in the upcoming fight, but one detail struck me. At first, it seemed like Daemon was coaxing Caraxes in the Dragonpit to join the battle. But episode 10 will see Daemon bring Jahaerys’ dragon Vermithor to the Blacks.

Vermithor’s addition is crucial since the Greens have Vhagar on their side. And we can be sure that ferocious Aemond will flaunt his dragon in the most destructive manner possible.

Episode 10 titled “The Black Queen” leads us to believe that the final winner will be Rhaenyra – but at a great personal cost.

Who else will fall at Storm’s end? Will Rhaenyra sit atop the Iron Throne in King’s Landing by the time the credits roll in the finale?

House of the Dragon Episode 10: Release Date, Recap, and Speculation
Rhaenys Targaryen

The news of Viserys’ death spreads in the castle, but before it reaches too many ears, the council are ordered together.

After learning Viserys’ last wish via Alicent, some council members reveal they’ve secretly plotted to install Aegon on the Iron Throne behind the backs of Rhaenyra, Viserys, and even Alicent before Viserys supposedly changed his mind.

In the fray following the reveal, Ser Criston kills Lord Beesbury, and Alicent takes the reigns, commanding no harm must come to Rhaenyra and her family. Aegon has fled the castle, and two teams embark on Otto and Alicent’s behest to bring him home, the Cargyll twins on one side and Cole & Aemond on the other.

Alicent turns to an imprisoned Rhaenys and urges her to support Aegon as King, but Rhaenys hesitates. White Worm tips Otto off, and the Cargyll twins secure Aegon. But Aemond and Cole intercept and fight the twins to take Aegon to Alicent.

Larys Strong informs Alicent of Mysaria’s web of spies and takes care of it by having her home submerged in a fire. Alicent convinces Aegon to wear the crown and the title, following which Aegon is crowned in a ceremonious coronation in front of the townsfolk.

Suddenly the floor erupts, with Rhaenys atop her dragon Meleys. Rhaenys’ dragon sends a warning roar, even though Alicent had accepted the Greens’ end momentarily, and flies off to Dragonstone to warn Rhaenyra.
