The official images from the upcoming House of the Dragon finale feature Rhaenyra Targaryen and her supporters, the Blacks preparing for the Dance of Dragons.
In George R.R. Martin’s novel as well as the HBO adaptation, after death of King Viserys, the realm was split into two sects- the Blacks and the Greens. The Blacks supported the succession of Princess Rhaenyra while the Greens wanted Prince Aegon II as the King.
Last week’s episode focused solely on the Green Council, comprising the supporters of Queen Alicent Hightower and Aegon II. The episode also featured the unlawful coronation of Aegon II as King, usurping the Iron Throne from Rhaenyra, its rightful heir. Rhaenyra or her family did not make an appearance in this episode.
However, the season finale, titled “The Black Queen” will focus solely on the Blacks and their preparation for the upcoming war. Ahead of the finale’s release, HBO released a new set of images from the upcoming episode featuring Rhaenyra, Daemon and their children. Check out the images below
Rhaenyra and Daemon will find out about King Viserys’ death and Aegon being crowned King in this episode. The finale will also officially mark the beginning of the Dance of Dragons, which will continue in the next season.
The finale will also give us the first insight into the unofficial Black council, which will consist of Ser Lorent Marbrand (Max Wrottesley) and Maester Gerardys (Phil Daniels) among others, as seen side-by-side in an image above.
Several images also feature the Painted Table, which the Blacks will use to plan their next move, most likely a siege of the Red Keep. The Painted Table is a significant prop in the series and was also seen in Game of Thrones, where Daenerys used the same table to plan her moves.
An episode preview released earlier this week also teased a major death, along with war on dragonback. War might break out early in the upcoming season finale itself. After an entire season of characterization and build-up, the stage is now set for the beginning of the infamous Targaryen civil war.
The House of the Dragon season finale will premiere on HBO Max on October 24, 2022.
