The GoT spinoff serves as a prequel set centuries ago in Westeros and will capture the civil war between the mighty Targaryen family and the fall of the House of Targaryen. The show stars Matt Smith, Rhys Ifans, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’arcy, Paddy Considine, Graham McTavish, Steve Touissant, Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, and Fabian Frankel.

Previously, according to the official synopsis provided, Season 1 was to depict the events leading up to the Dance of the Dragons, the name of the civil war between the members of the Targaryen family. But now, George R.R. Martin, the author of the Fire and Blood fantasy novel series upon which the prequel is based, has shed light on some new information regarding the scope of the show’s first season.

In an interview with Jason Concepcion, shared on the Official Game of Thrones Podcast: House of the Dragon, Martin explained that the show stretches across 28 years of the Targaryen House’s history, setting up the events leading to the Dance of the Dragons.

A lot of things are happening in Westeros as a continent, and there’s stuff going on all over, but House of the Dragon mostly concerns us with the issue of succession to the Iron Throne. Of course, the show starts in 101 AC at the Great Council, which the old King Harris has called to let the Lords of the realm advise him on who should succeed to the Iron throne after he dies. Then the war breaks out in 129 AC, so we have a 28-year run in the first season.

Martin mentions that Season 1 will not even cover the actual war itself, but only the matches lit to set the fire that would devour the Targaryen family and their hope to rule over the Iron Throne altogether.

You see the various characters introduced, and the conflicts begin to grow, the seeds of what will eventually be a war. But not right away. The seeds grow, feelings intensify, and grievances are collected and all of that stuff, so, yeah, a lot is going on there.

The first season will thus be a setup for the eventual Dance of the Dragons, which will probably scale the length of Season 2 and more. The writers want the viewers to fully understand the characters and their reasons to attack their own family.
