Youtuber Explains How He Created A Cap Shield That Bounces Back

A genius Marvel Fan has made a Captain America Shield that actually bounces back. Unfortunately, there’s no Vibranium in real life to help us create such amazing creations, so Youtuber Jake Laser (JLaservideo) relied on physics and a bit of brainstorming to recreate Cap’s shield.

The shield that Jake created not only bounces back but also looks really cool AND is quite strong, as he demonstrated later in the video. Jake has numerous videos on his YouTube channel where he has previously made various Marvel stuff, including Iron Man Suit, Spider-Man’s Web-Shooters, Yondu’s Arrow, among other insane inventions.

In the video, Jake explained the physics behind Cap’s shield and compared the shield to a Super Ball.

The reason Super Balls bounce so well is because they store the kinetic energy of the impact as potential energy through elastic deformation.

You can see as the ball hits the ground, it squishes down, and because rubber has a very high elastic limit, it can still return to its original shape, turning that stored potential energy back into kinetic energy and bouncing back.

Jake further explains that the shield is ‘basically a frisbee,’ and frisbees have curved edges that help them stay in the air for a longer time. But the trick was to combine the frisbee’s flying ability with the super ball’s bounce.

He also explained that as Cap’s shield is made of Vibranium, it has a high elastic limit on the stress-strain graph and can withstand an infinite amount of stress before breaking, but how can one do that in real life? Jake made a prototype out of a fiberglass ring as it has a high elastic limit and wrapped plastic over it, covering its hollow center.

Laser made the main shield out of carbon fiber with a fiberglass ring to provide bounce while keeping maximum strength. The center part was made out of carbon fiber cloth that he molded with resin and added latex rubber around it to keep the vibrations at a minimum.

To connect it to the wrist like Cap’s shield does, he added neodymium magnets to the shield and his wrist band. Jake tested and created a cool montage testing the shield, and it’s pretty impressive. Who needs Vibranium, right?

Captain America hands over his shield to Sam Wilson at the end of Avengers: Endgame and we see Sam become the next Captain America in the Disney+ series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Laser also used some of the scenes from the show as an example of how the shield bounces back.

Here’s hoping Jake makes Bucky’s robotic arm next.

About Marvel Cinematic Universe

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is an American media franchise and shared universe centered on a series of superhero films and TV series, independently produced by Marvel Studios and based on characters that appear in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.

The franchise includes comic books, short films, television series, and digital series. The shared universe, much like the original Marvel Universe in comic books, was established by crossing over common plot elements, settings, cast, and characters.
