B99 Final Season Has Tackled 3 Police Issues So Far, What’s Next?

The final season for Brooklyn Nine-Nine premiered earlier this month, with two episodes coming out each week.

The writers knew that in the wake of police brutality being such a serious issue, the show had to reflect real-world policing issues and systemic racism.

It is evident, just like the writers have done many times in the previous seasons, that the series handles such issues comically while also being aware of how deeply rooted the real problems are in society.

The show does not make light of the issues in any way. Showrunner Dan Goor even had four episodes ready to go, but they were all scrapped to address these topics in an effort to do better. And that is exactly what these new episodes have done.

In these sets of two episodes every week, one of each talked about policing issues.

Rosa Diaz

S08 E01 – The Good Ones addresses police brutality and how the characters all react to it differently. The episode categorized the types of reactions and opinions people had after George Floyd’s murder.

These include Rose not believing in the system anymore, Jake believing there are still some ‘good ones’ left, and Boyle being hyper woke (and borderline pretentious).

S08 E03 – The Blue Flu addresses another such issue. Union representative O’Sullivan appears as the big bad and uses a ‘contaminated food’ scheme to organize a uniformed officer strike that leaves the Nine-Nine short-staffed.

This one explores union corruption and theories about if police presence is related to the crime rate.

S08 E06 – The Setup sees Jake making a bad arrest. Based on Finegold’s words (and refusal to have Peralta in on the action), Jake goes to the scene where he finds a man acting suspiciously and arrests him.

However, the FBI already made the correct arrest, and the man Jake brought in was innocent.

After a bit more confusion and poor decisions on Jake’s part, Jake has to be suspended for five months. Jake learns a valuable lesson. However, Holt says that he hopes Jake can someday learn the lesson without an innocent man having to lose his job.

But if you’re worried that B99 has taken a ‘serious’ turn, that’s not entirely true. While the show does address these topics with these episodes, at the core, it is still a comedy and will not fail to make you laugh.

Jake & Terry

Now the question is whether the rest of the upcoming episodes will follow the same pattern and have one of each pair address other policing issues?

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 8 Episodes 7 and 8 are titled ‘Game of Boyles’ and ‘Renewal,’ respectively. Whereas the last two episodes are titled ‘The Last Day Pt 1’ and ‘The Last Day Pt 2.’

Assuming that the writers only rewrote four episodes, it is safe to guess that either of the following two episodes would tackle another issue while the last two will be sort of ‘farewell’ episodes.

Game of Boyles will see Terry and Jake go along with Charles to visit the Boyle Family Farm, with Amy and Rosa attempting to help Holt with his marital issues.

Renewal will see the 99th Precinct come all together to work on an important case. So, if there’s going to be another episode about social issues, this one could be it.
