Let’s Talk about the Obi-Wan Vs. Vader “Rematch of the Century”

Obi-Wan’s duels with Darth Vader are ones that are always highly spoken about. So when we see them spar again in Obi-Wan Kenobi Ep 3, it is quite shocking how easily Vader overpowers Obi-Wan.

But in what fans are calling the “Rematch of the Century,” the finale sure turned the tables when the Jedi Master is able to best his former Padawan. But how does this happen? How did a “weak” Obi-Wan defeat Vader?

Well, Obi-Wan has always been a strong Jedi. So, when he finally reconnects with the Force in the Obi-Wan Kenobi finale, he is able to attack Vader’s helmet that incapacitates him. In this way, Obi-Wan is able to defeat Darth Vader.

There was never a doubt in my mind that not only would there be a rematch with Vader, but also that this time around, it would be Obi-Wan that would be the last one standing.

The series has always been about how the events of Revenge of the Sith and Clone Wars have left Obi-Wan quite broken, and how even though it’s difficult, he must find his connection with the Force once again.

Obi-Wan’s “Rey” of Hope

Tell me I wasn’t the only one who noticed that Obi-Wan’s rocking lifting scene was so similar to Rey’s scene in The Last Jedi. That’s not even where the parallels end. Both Rey and Obi-Wan’s stories use the trope of the protagonist who is unsure of their powers but needs to believe in themselves in order to defeat the bad guy.

Obi-Wan, whom we’ve known to be an ace Jedi, is quite scared and hollow in the first few episodes. He scrambles through moves in his first fight against Vader and gets knocked out quite easily.

But is it really that surprising when he overpowers Vader in Ep 6? He wasn’t weaker than Vader to begin with. We already know he has an incredible grip over the Force, and that his connection/powers only weakened because of his fears and insecurities.

Here come Luke and Leia, who serve as reminders that he has to get up there and give it his best shot. Getting buried under a bunch of rock is “pathetic,” as a younger Obi-Wan would put it.

Ultimately, he realizes that he has to be dauntless in the face of Darth Vader, who used to be a dear one, but now is colossally dangerous as the Chosen One on the Sith’s side

Obi-wan Kenobi

It is this faith that helps him land a lethal blow on Darth Vader’s head, cracking open his helmet and damaging his life support systems. He could’ve possibly killed Vader right there itself. But that would make him no better than Vader. So, of course, he doesn’t.
